no doubt. I had no agenda tbh, its just something that has

Elite sports have been warned that they may be unable to have
fans back for six months.
Huddleston said he was "unable" to give any prospective target
dates for the return of fans, because of the uncertainty
surrounding the pandemic.

And here's a laugh for you all. Saracens never relied on ticket
sales, their ground is limited to 10K maximum. Are they one of
the better placed clubs to ride out this particular storm?

Saracens worry is will there be a championship league for them
to play in?My understanding is the financial threat to those
clubs is even more serious/critical than the premiership because
of savage cuts by RFU.
It is a horrendous problem for all.

I saw something saying that the RFU funding for Champ clubs will
drop to as little as 40k as things stand??

So as a government I can spend my money to support professional
sports, where most clubs are loss making enterprises with Some
very highly paid staff (I acknowledge that not all staff are),
or I can support the low paid or people on temporary contracts
in otherwise profitable areas of the economy. Surely it’s the
latter, isn’t it?

But you can throw money at "the arts" and no-one complains it's
stealing money from the poor. As long as opera survives who
cares about rugby?

Why isn't it a both/and thing? The Government is borrowing
massively to prop up the economy.
The relative cost to support rugby is not huge in the grand
scheme of things - £120m would probably support the clubs for a
year (based on £500k revenue per match x 20 matches per club),
and about the same again for the RFU.
For comparison, the Furlough scheme cost £14bn per month (and
Brexit is costing us £600m per week according to Goldman Sachs).
The cost of propping up a sport is a small additional price but
would have value in terms of a) morale and entertainment during
the crisis and b) not having a hole in the entertainment sector
when we eventually emerge from this.
The tricky thing for a Government is managing the optics of
propping up a sport that's seen as having wealthy backers,
wealthy players and wealthy fans. It would probably need to be
structured as a long term loan - perhaps (if the Government
weren't so opposed to the BBC) with a deal to get more matches
on terrestrial tv. For a relatively small price you get
something symbolic to keep people entertained, and it's pretty
trivial in the grand scheme of things.

professional rugby union?
