I don't like when people point to teams having a run of form and
extrapolate that to long term success. Both Bath and Wasps are
in good form, but that doesn't mean it'll stick. Look at
Northampton - everyone was raving about them under Chris Boyd.
Now the knives are out as they've been awful.
It's probably best not trying to compare us with other teams too
much; what works for one set of players and coaches might not
work for others. All I can say is that it does seem to me that
we're too soft, we lack leadership and grit, and it's possible
that our coaches are not getting the players into the right
competitive mindset.

I still feel we got it horribly wrong by not grabbing Richard
Cockerill as the result of our worldwide search.when we had the
chance.

There’s no doubt that Cockerill has done a fantastic job of
turning Edinburgh from also-rans in to a dangerous outfit.
However, at the point he left Tigers, he was hardly in high
demand. I can’t imagine many Quins fans would have wanted him
then.
In hindsight, they are a lot worse off without him, but it
definitely didn’t feel like that at the time. An important point
to note for those calling for Gustard’s head ...
Someone like Cockerill is exactly the type of no BS
disciplinarian we need to bust some heads, but if I’m totally
honest, I can’t see that ever working at Quins.
It’s in our DNA to be a bit maverick and I just can’t see a
Cockerill ‘Sergeant Major’ type ever being a popular choice.
Sometimes what you want is not what you need and vice versa ...
I actually hoped Gustard would be the perfect middle ground -
tough enough to take no s**t, but innovative enough to fit our
ethos. It’s not worked out that way so far, but I’m encouraged
by the new signings on and off the pitch, so hopefully it will
come good.

Agree completely. We beat Bath home and away in the champions
cup this year and early on in the season the natives were
getting restless. Wasps threw away a massive lead to us at The
Ricoh in the game just before Christmas and we beat Bristol,
league darlings at the start of the season.
In the leadership and grit point, this is where I struggle to
pinpoint where we go from here. I’d say the number of leaders we
have has steadily declined since around 2013 to the point now
where I struggle to think who will be captain next year. I think
the attitude spreads beyond the pitch too. While the Care, Robbo
and Brown era have served us brilliantly, I do wonder if maybe
some elements of them being around as long as they have has
blunted the emergence of new leadership figures in the dressing
room. I’m not at all knocking their immense contribution to the
club over the past decade but speculating as to why we maybe
don’t have as many leaders emerging as we could have.

Yeah. I’d agree with that.
Of the younger group, James Chisholm is the only one who seems
to have any real leadership qualities.

I think that Chis Jr will be named club captain once Robbo
departs ( the only other possible option I can see is Matt
Symons, but JC is a Quin through and through, which gives him
the edge)

He is probably the only starter other than Marler who is
experienced, a probable starter and a long time Quin.

Brown and Care are both experienced and guaranteed starters, but
they'd both be short term appointments. Agree with the general
consensus that Chisholm looks the best likely candidate. Plus he
does show work rate and desire on the pitch week in week out.
Of the younger players Marcus Smith would be an option, although
personally I think FH's have enough on their plates without
having to captain

Agreed totally, but Quins are either not able or prepared to
spend the money required to assemble a team of high quality
players. I think we will always be 6th-10th.
To me too many players are journeymen standard so I do not
expect anything better. The odd good game but I see no reason
to think we will ever be championship contenders again.

I do worry that people are expecting far top much from the three
SA signings. Louw is replacing Sinckler, so not sure he is
necessarily going to represent an overall improvement. He's just
replacing an excellent player who's left, so basically status
quo maintained in that position.
Estherhuizen should obviously be an improvement on our current
options at 12. Green I don't really know anything about but I'm
not sure those two are going to represent a massive boost in
quality that is sufficient to make up for our glaring
deficiencies at the moment.
