I don’t think Gustard is the issue. I think we have seen
improvements under his reign. What has not improved is our
awful passing. Yesterday Bath our-dogged our forwards and their
defence was really good. Our pack gave us no go forwards though
actually we seemed to have about parity in the scrum and line
out which is in itself an achievement. Our loose play and
defence needs to be even better. I’m a huge Care fan, but with
no go forwards he had no answers and we looked better with
Landajo. Yes Herron made some poor passes but he was far from
the only one. He made a couple of good breaks and a couple of
strong tackles, one a try saving one. It just seems to me that
other teams have improved more and faster than us. Look at
Sale, Wasps, Bristol and Bath, none were much better than us
before

I thought I posted this yesterday but can't see it so maybe I
didn't press post so ......
I wouldn't have appointed Gustard in the first place as he is
too tainted by the cheating scandal.
Having said that he has now made significant changes to the
squad and very few of his signings have impressed. We still seem
to be a run of the mill mid-table team but one that fast losing
its identity as we increasingly look to South Africa for
answers.
I wouldn't sack him now but if he left tomorrow I wouldn't shed
any tears.

I don't see any improvement. Still capable of turning it on for
the odd match, but far too often play like a rabble. Thta has to
be a coaching issue for me.

I think we miss a big nasty horrible brute in the second row.
Kind of bloke you look at and think "errrm, hes gonna hurt me".
I dont actually mind if he is any good (well to an extent), I
just think we miss the oomph. Someone who is gonna put the s**ts
up the oppo and give us some real bulk. Lewies and Symmons cant
play every week.

I agree, but that’s been Quins for as long as I can remember and
TBH, I’m not sure if helps still having Bomb and NEv around?
Maybe familiarity isn’t helping and we need some new faces to
look after the forwards and skills as both areas clearly need
work.
TBH, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Flannery take on a
bigger role. His straight talking and attention to detail strike
me as a far better recipe for a successful coach than Bomb’s
approach of being everybody’s mate who just happened to be a
good scrummaging prop once upon a time (under different laws).
The less said about our ‘skills’ at the moment the better. Not
sure what NEv is bringing?

The one thing clear is Gustard talks a good game after every
defeat, and knows what went wrong etc etc. Even after the hair
dryer treatment, and rightfully so after matches like Worcester,
nothing has actually sunk in, or looked really any different.
I think it would be fair to suggest that there is a lack of
support/belief/buy-in from the team in the coaching set up, when
you consider we highlight the same issues almost every season.
Maybe they are too "Pally" with Nev and Jones? The same theory
would also make sense with Kingston and Minty when they were
here.

Yep. I can’t remember who said it elsewhere, but Gustard,
Flannery and Long don’t seem to be ‘weak’ characters. I’m
surprised there hasn’t been more discipline.
I think we have a squad of players that are content to just bob
along. I feel like they buy in to the coaching team’s ideas off
the pitch but then crumble as soon as the first thing goes wrong
on the field. Yesterday was a prime example. We started well
enough and were building a decent lead only to fall apart after
losing concentration and conceding a stupid, soft try. Same old
story ...

For me Flannery gave the game away when interviewed during the
match by BT. His direct straight talking about body angles going
into contact etc showed me that the coaches have knowledge &
game smarts. What is clear is some of our players can at times
be quite thick in a game situation. I worry for us watching
Irish vs Gloucester & can see us losing the rest of our away
games this season.

I agree about the players in the game situation. The amount of
times I watch us and think "why on earth are you doing that".
We make so many wrong decisions

Stuart Hooper played for Bath for quite a few years before
joining the coaching set up & ultimately becoming Head
Coach/DOR. Doesn't seem any evidence of being too pally there.
Since he's taken over they have become a seriously tough & hard
side to beat. Evidence was there pre covid & they havent let up.
Wasps were looking a mess before Lee Blackett took over, but
look at them now. What exactly is it, that these two have
brought to their clubs to turn things around so dramatically?
Yet we seem to flounder on & on..??
