The discussion about individual player selection or non
selection misses the point.With so many games in quick
succession, all clubs need two teams, and there are two choices.
a) pick the best team possible for the must-win games and a
'2nd' team for the hope-to-win games. Or b) select the best
compromise for all the games - ie an average team for every
runout. Gustard chose option b) and it hasn't worked - because
average teams rarely win anything, while 2nd teams can often
delight with pressure of expectation removed. I can't imagine a
bigger must-win game than today with the whole rugby world
watching and Gustard has let his compromise b) option overide
the neccessity of the occasion.

Firstly there are rules set down by Prem rugby about player
welfare for the end of this season and time/selection. Add in we
are trying to complete near on a season and a half in about a
seasons timescale and people worry about the amount of rugby for
players normally. You are going to have to mix and match players
and selection! Had Smith, Chisholm and Lewies made all the
difference - doubt it!
Today’s defeat was not coaches fault! I can not believe that
coaching team coached them that. Gussy was coach of Sarries and
England - he knows what he is doing. The others might be
new(ish) but they are winners! Winners don’t coach that.
The big guys who should have stood up were the worst. Marler,
Brown, Care, even Robshaw had very poor games. When your leaders
play badly then what can you expect of the rest. For Bath
international’s today were outstanding - full stop.
Let’s look at players not coaches.

The biggest issue for me today was the very poor execution of
plays on the final third, more than once poor passes or offloads
allowed Bath to get the ball and clear. On another day some of
these would have gone to hand and points would have resulted.
True the physical intensity wasn’t there at times, the penalty
count went up and up which doesn’t help and for sure Herron
struggled but it is what it is right now in what has been a very
strange season.
Let’s be honest the target should now be the top eight as that
gets us into the big boys cup and beating Sale in the up coming
cup final.

Also people keep forgetting this is still not the imagine of the
side he wants!

Best post on the thread.
I’m not convinced by Gustard. He talks a good game, but so far
there isn’t that much evidence that he’s able to walk the walk.
However, getting rid of him would be a silly knee-jerk reaction
without an obvious upside. Who is going to replace him? Is there
a list of experienced, World Class coaches desperate for the
Quins job? I guarantee you there is not.
Esterhuizen, Louw and Green are among the most exciting signings
we’ve made in years and I’d like to see if they can bring some
new impetus to the squad.
Maybe if things are no different in a year’s time it may be that
we need to look at an alternative, but now is not the time.

I am state educated, originally from a not nice part of London
thank you very much.
Cheers for the judgement and showing your own prejudices.
I want what is best for the club and that is certainly not
tearing up the whole clubs blueprint and starting again with a
new coach and coaches.

It was a tongue in cheek responce to the beer and football jab
from you.
Nothing personal but people are entitled to express their views
and if somone posts something you don't agree with doesn't mean
you should insult them, or you might not like the response.

I shouldn't have put the football thing. But as a former season
ticket holder at QPR and having experienced at first hand the
shortsightedness, exploitation of the fans football fans. I lost
love for that game a long time ago.
I appreciate having a beer in the stands, before and after the
game. I like that I can sit next to away fans at Quins and take
my clients, wife and children to games.

Great points QC.
Gustards success previously has been with Sarries & England, 2
sides that have very good second string options so one game plan
across the board will always be adhered too. He has a different
challenge here in that he doesn't have 45 proven internationals
at his disposal, so he needs to rethink his approach to the
current challenges of 3 games a week. Lose to Oirish though and
the backlash could be severe.
You cannot hide from the fact that the players never stood up
today, not one of them can absolve themselves of blame for a
poor performance. Also, and it kills me to say it, Bath were
very good today and made us look ordinary. This does happen in
professional rugby, that's probably how Glaws feel when we beat
them at Castle Grim.
And no, I can't imagine top DORs are thinking that the Stoop is
their dream destination.

I appreciate that the players try their hardest on wages that
are nowhere near what you would find in soccerball. the game is
also played in a fair and respectful manner. I moved to
Twickenham in mid 20s and lived around the corner front St
Magrets, the stoop and the big stoop. Got bitten by the game.
