       Gussy interesting comparison with JK
   DIR By: Canuck

Tomorrow is PG’s 40th prem game as our DOR.
I was thinking about how his record stacked up as DOR with JK.
JK was advised he was leaving the DOR role after exactly 40
games in charge (although he stayed on for remaining couple of
games at clubs request.. totally different circumstances of
       course)
       Prem records - JK - played 40 won 18 lost 22 win ratio 45%
       Gussy - played 39 won 17 drawn 1 lost 21 win ratio 44.9%
Very similar records - many different opinions within the fan
base I know but as we are always reminded in professional sport,
       the stats don’t lie.
As a long standing Quins fan all I am interested in is the
success of the club and at the moment we have not moved forward
from the JK days which was surely the intention.
Hopefully Gussy will be treated with a little more respect than
       JK as we move forward.

It is an interesting comparison. I suppose one area where
Gustard gets a bit more leeway is that (it feels like) he has
had more of a rebuilding job to do on the squad and coaching
       staff.
The latter in particular I think has bought him some time; we
can see what Sean Long is starting to do and when it works it
has huge potential - it's worth persisting with. We can also
hear what Jerry Flannery is bringing to the lineout, courtesy of
the lack of crowds, and it's clear he knows what he's about.
And at least one new squad member is already paying off. I think
it's safe to conclude that, barring injury, Chris Ashton will
contribute a lot of points. He's already in the elite "more
points than appearances" group, and long may he stay there.

Whilst the numbers are an interesting comparison, I think it's
more about the perception of the team/squad & their direction,
willingness to try new plays & ways of doing things.
With Gussy I have the perception that the squad trust him more
and are buying into what he and the mainly new coaching staff
are trying to do. The team under Kingston lost their way and
were sliding down the pecking order. Now, we're a mid-table team
that can on their day give the league leaders an upset (see
Sarries & Exeter before the break).

To be fair we have been a mid-table team that can on their day
give the league leaders an upset for much of the last thirty
       years!

Yep. Agree with all of that.
If the new SA boys come in and click (as I hope they will), we
will have the makings of a very decent 23.
Another, better lock and a better second choice 10 and we’d be
       in a great spot.

...and a couple of aggressive flankers. Otherwise, spot on.

And maybe another LH to back up Marler/Els

So, basically, lots of work still to do! :P
Although if Els comes good then Botta is a decent 3rd choice LH
(just a massively overpriced one). He hasn't looked like great
value so far, so I really hope Els does live up to the hype.

Thats part of my point though, we dont really want an over
priced 3rd choice LH. Rather another Els type player tbh

But part of that is how much JK/PG get by way of resources. JK
was a budget promotion (though he had been DOR for Richmond when
in the prem) and that was carried on in the recruitment, where
we bought anyone in the bargain basement. I don't know if that
was his choice or a budget restraint put on him. I think PG has
been cannier in his recruitment, learned the lesson of not
giving too many players to England, and the future is hopeful if
not bright. We're spending up to the salary cap.
