Worcester on Wednesday ...
DIR By: Quinston Churchill

I’ve just seen Worcester’s lineup for their away game with Wasps
tomorrow ... 2nd/3rd string which Almost certainly means they’ll
be going full bore for us at Sixways on Wednesday.
If we’re relatively unchanged for Saturday, what kind of side
are we expecting to put out for Worcester, given we’ll have to
rotate heavily under the new welfare rules?
I’m thinking something like:
1. Garcia Botta
2. Gray
3. Collier
4. Young
5. Cavubati
6. White
7. Evans
8. Lawday
9. Care*
10. Herron
11. R. Chisholm
12. Lasike
13. Tapuai
14. Murley
15. Morris
16. Elia
17. Els
18. van Dyk
19. Lamb
20.
21. Steele
22. Northmore
23. Lang
I’m speculating a lot so it will really depend upon how many
minutes some guys get this weekend (the props came on very late
last weekend).
Obviously a weakened XV but not awful ... definitely stronger
than the teams Wuss and Wasps are putting out.

That's a squad with 9 internationals in it, if I have counted
correctly. A few with only a handful of caps, but still.
The big question will be how much practice they have had
together. However, I imagine that Gussy and co will have planned
ahead for the level of rotation required and given the teams
plenty of time together in training.

I’d go with our strongest available 15 against Sarries and
probably our strongest subs in the backs, but I would be
considering holding back some of the forwards who might
otherwise have made the bench to start them on Wednesday. Given
our current front row resources I think we should be looking to
avoid any squad overlap there between the two games.
I wouldn’t expect to see Lang at 12, as fly half is probably the
position where we have the least depth, and we should have other
centres available. I do expect to see some of the academy guys
such as Head, Hammond and Kenningham getting some game time over
the next three matches.

It's a pain really. I suspect we would have absolutely hammered
Sarries if we'd played them back in march/April, but I dare say
they will be a different animal tomorrow.

Sarries will be prioritising the European games above all else.
For them it's a balancing act of making sure that:
i) Their front-line players have enough game time to knock off
the rust while
ii) Avoiding injuries to those same players.
I expect to see some rotation from them from last week, with the
guys who were on the bench potentially starting, and players who
were left out potentially making it onto the bench.

Given that we’ve gone for more or less the same 23 (Ashton out
for Morris), the side I suggested in the OP possibly won’t be
too far off.
I know a bunch of those guys have been in both match day 23s,
but as I mentioned the subs in the pack didn’t get much game
time last week so a lot will depend on how much they feature
tomorrow.
The likes of Els, van Dyk, Thomas, Young, Tex etc. have all been
training together for weeks now so I think we could fairly
comfortably put together a reasonable side to play Worcester.

Ref Worcester away - given the selection for tomorrow and the
team that played against Sale - I’m slightly concerned we might
struggle to select a 2nd row / back row that together is
competitive.
However, my main concern is who will be the back up 10 - with
Herron having to start and with Smith and Lang unavailable due
to playing the first two games.
However, I have faith in the coaching team and I’m sure they
have a plan for these positions / bench cover especially for fly
half.

If Herron picked up a knock during the game, I would expect Taps
to move to 10 and Chisholm Snr to take over kicking duties

That team looks pretty spot on, for a midweek game under the
present circumstances. If Ashton is fit, I'd expect him to start
ahead of Chis senior, having missed Sarries. That would release
Lang from bench duties. Back-up for 10 is then a concern, but
Chis has played there in A team matches in the past (needs must
and all that).
Really, we ought to be able to field a midweek team that can
beat Worcester fairly comfortably, since they too will need to
be rotating, if we are to be serious top end of the table
competitors. How good our best XV looks is fairly irrelevant in
the overall scheme of a season.

The trouble is, Worcester rotated very heavily against Wasps
though so it’s basically our 2nd/3rd string vs. their first
team.
I don’t think the team will be too far off what I posted in the
OP. I’d have liked to have seen Lasike start, but judging by
Gussy’s post match comments, it sounds as though he is managing
a knock, so I think we’ll see him from the bench again.
I agree that Ashton might come in, but after Steele’s excellent
cameo, I’d like to see him get a start rather than rush DC back
in to the starting side.
I’m with brfc on the issues at 10 and in the back row. Herron’s
performances so far haven’t inspired a massive amount of
confidence and we’ll need to play smart on Wednesday. Similarly,
Worcester’s back row (probably Hill, Lewis and Kvesic) is one of
their strongest units and considerably better than our 2nd/3rd
choices.
In hindsight, we probably should have rotated more against
Saracens, but we are where we are.
