As a coach is he not in the best place to get his players to do
what he's asking for?

Scrums themselves aren't really the problem> It's the time taken
setting and re-setting. A good scrum can be entertaining to
watch, especially if it's a case of pushing the attacking side
off the ball, winning one against the head, etc. Things have
improved somewhat over the recent years, but there's more
needed.

This. 2 or more re-sets are not uncommon and the time taken to
set-up is ridiculously long.
Have watched some slightly older rugby during lockdown, it’s
clear that scrums have massively slowed down. Obviously laws
have changed etc. but surely refs can speed things up?

The changes to scrum laws have been driven by concern for the
health and safety of the players and I’m sure future changes
will also be driven by that concern. Any proposals not taking
that into consideration are unlikely to get very far.

It may just be my impression, but I think one of the biggest
issues that would be easy to fix is how straight the props legs
are. At the elite level the Props feet are well behind their
hips when the two front rows are in position, almost to the
point of having their knees almost straight. That makes it a lot
more likely that front rows will collapse as they're in an
unstable position. Raise the height that the front rows have to
engage at (with them closer together before the "set" command
too). That reduces the instability (as well as making the "hit"
less of an issue) and hence increases the chance of the scrum
completing. Also, it might make it more likely that the
defending hooker is able to strike against the head too.

Leave our Scrums alone!! It is part of what makes RU a game that
can be played by people of all shapes and sizes. Go watch RL if
you are really that bothered.

That's a bit silly. Scrums are awful now and it's a recent-ish
phenomenon. We want good scrums, not the disaster area that
currently exists.

I think it was Wayne Barnes who made the comment over the
weekend that the pace at which scrums get set up is largely down
to the ref. If he or she makes it clear that things need to move
quickly, the players will get the message.
That said , I would like to see WR trial having the front rows
bind first, though, as that should ensure more stability and
fewer resets.
What has been encouraging in the last round of matches, though,
is how many scrums were actual contests with one side getting a
shove on the other. If we can get back to the point where going
for a pushover try is a genuine option, then fans will start to
see more value in the scrum.

I appreciate the sentiment, but scrums haven't been left alone
since rugby went professional. There's always new scrum
laws/tweaks. Each season the scrum is a little different to how
it was played before. I still don't see what's so hard in
getting the hooker to make a straight feed - that'd be my first
change to the laws.
