I always thought it was towing based on someone explaining it to
me as an old boating reference. Just goes to show that Wiki is
far more helpful than friends who think they know everything.

Don't let facts get in the way of rant but:
Many players don't sing their anthems
Players have refused to play on Sundays - most notably recently
Euan Murray (and yes I know he is Scottish so doesn't fall under
the RFU)
Players have opted not to wear rainbow laces -

Perhaps some players think these things are futile political
gestures?
"Taking the knee" is something I have discussed with a friend.
We agreed, that if we were a player in the public eye - at
Quins, say - and Gustard said 'we are going to take the knee,
before kickoff, we would go along with the group.
However, if we were at our private rugby club and someone said
'let's take the knee', we wouldn't.

I seem to remember the all time great all black flanker Michael
Jones refused to play on a Sunday due to his faith, to the point
that he wasn't selected for the 1995 world cup squad as they
would have had to leave him out of the quarter and semi final
games which were both to be on a Sunday.

Except of course that it is those friends who are probably
updating Wiki :)

The article seems to imply that not taking the Knee in support
of BLM is the same as being racist. BLM is a political movement.
Not supporting them is not racist if you don't agree with all
their ideals and policies. Being anti racist doesn't mean you
have to support certain movements. It is how you live your life.
How you treat people. No one is perfect and we all make
mistakes. But treating all your fellow humans equally and how
you would like to be treated is the best anyone can do even if
you don't go out of your way to show it to the world in general.
I personally hate showing my personal beliefs to the world. It
is none of the worlds business. If players want to take the knee
then fair play. But also those that don't should not be asked to
explain why.

I think it's more that for the South African government, not
taking a knee raises the suspicion of racism. Also of course it
diverts attention from what's going on with C19 and other
problems in your own country. As I say, these players can't
honestly have a real recollection of South Africa under white
rule, they were all wearing the anti-racist T shirts, like Mr
Diamond (Steve not Neil) I hope this is a storm in a teacup.

I won't be taking a knee.
But that's mainly due to pre-patellar bursitis and the inability
to get back up again! ;)
