It flies in the face of rationality.

I think it's only a request for clarification rather than an
accusation so far. As I said, I hope it proves to be a storm in
       a teacup.

Anyone can take a knee as a ‘show’ of support but surely it’s
the long term change of attitude and behaviour of EVERYONE, on
ALL sides of this debate that will make the real difference.

I think any player not taking the knee is setting themselves up
for a torrent of abuse in the press and on social media.
Better to just to do as everyone else does, kneel and get it
       over and done with.
If the player doesn't agree with it, then they can just kneel
down at the back of the team so they don't appear on photos.

SA sports politics are bizarre, byzantine, and frequently
incomprehensible, and this is a great example of how it can work
in practice. Attacks like these are fairly commonplace and
should not reflect on the players or the sport in this country,
nor detract from what's trying to be achieved.
There's little doubt that some of the SA leadership is
       self-serving, disingenuous, and potentially dangerous.

I understand what you are saying but this will just turn it into
       a meaningless gesture.
The real problem is with a small but vocal minority who are only
prepared to interpret things in a way to think the worst of
others. They only inflame the situation and until this changes
it's difficult to see how anything will really change.

Surely, if all players are obligated to take this action, then
       the whole thing becomes meaningless.

I suspect that this is the way it will go.
During Autumn internationals, England players are obliged to
sing "God save the Queen" even if they are republicans; and to
do a 2 minute silence - even if they are a pacifist group that
disagrees with doing it; and play on Sunday - even if they are
       deeply religious.
While ever there is a view that adhering to these actions is the
right thing, then it is impossible for sports people to do
       anything else.
They have to wear rainbow laces and take the knee, etc.
Basically, it is not up to them to belive in what they are
saying - we just need them to show that they are towing the line
with what the RFU, etc want to promote. After all, the RFU, etc
are paying their salaries. They are basically just adverts for
       the RFU.

Then in my opinion that would be wrong.

They are not obliged to sing, they are obliged to stand while it
       is being sung.

I suspect some people are overreacting to what is a very South
African problem. Rugby in the UK does not demand people kneel,
and were it not for SA's messed-up politics, there would not
have been any drama about Friday's game.
