He works off the ball and picks good lines, and I can see the
two of them coming up with some really interesting ways to vary
the point of attack and lines we use.

advantage. Still some rough edges to polish off, but our
performance was very controlled with some moments of real
promise. The offloading in that first break was reminiscent of
2011-12 and will be very hard to stop if we can start doing it
regularly.

Yep. Esterhuizen will also give us another offloading option in
midfield too.
If our set piece can consistently give us the solid platform we
saw last night, I think we’ll really see the backs firing.
Landajo worked well with Smith last night. He made mostly good
decisions and let Smith run the game from 10. DC doesn’t always
do that - I often feel like it’s a weird competition between him
and Smith re. who is actually running the game. When Smith is
getting less ball, he’s more likely to try to force it, whereas
last night’s game shows that he’s more than capable of managing
a tight game.
I actually thought he worked better in combination with
Hidalgo-Clyne as well. The DC/Smith combo is the best on paper,
but in practice, I’d like them to compete less and work on their
partnership.

I did wonder at the time. I thought the ball was clearly over
the line and was surprised the ref didn't at least ask the TMO.
Pearce had a good evening otherwise, though. A couple of
slightly harsh decisions for either side but otherwise ran the
game well and was clear on the new rules.

If Clifford is retiring then this will be a major worry with
squad balance...I think we will see a few further announcements
from not just us but other clubs post 19/20 season. We have only
announced squad for this season not next.

The referee seemed very good to me, but on this occasion it
seemed to me that the goal was clear.
It seemed strange to me, as you rightly said that he didn't even
ask for the TMO

Was there not a knock on by us just beforehand? I think he gave
the resulting scrum to Sale.

We only have THomas as LH cover for this season, if he does not
stay I expect another LH to come in

Think having Ashton and Brown in the backfield allowed Smith to
better control the game, both vocal and experienced readers of
the game. Hope we can build on this performance against Sarries,
will there be squad rotation?

I think the ref asked Sale if he needed to review it and and
Manu said no it had been knocked on. Good sportsmanship.

Manu dropped it before the line. Not even close tbh
