Agree about Kyle leaving. It looked to me like he was playing
for himself without any thoughts of the team or his team mates.

Ive said this before but, I like a hooker that can Hook/Throw. A
prop that can push. We did the basics really well and managed
the game perfect. If you have a set piece that works and is a
threat you will win more than you lose. All the best sides do
the basics well. Thats is the first time is a long while I had
confidence in our set piece (even in those conditions). PG
seems to have signed players with their main job in mind (the
props we have signed, even on short term all have a reputation
as good/destructive in the scrum)
It was also great to see 2 players that have struggled (bladwin
and landajo) look like the players we hoped/expected them to be.
Promising stuff but needs backing up now. Consistency been our
problem for while

Same here. Our set piece game looked decent on Friday against a
quality Sale pack.
I was really encouraged by Baldwin and Landajo’s performances.
They both did their jobs and did them well. As you say, doing so
consistently is going to be the key.
In fairness to Baldwin, he was pretty good in his last couple of
games prior to the break - I thought he was actually very decent
against Exeter for example.

For me (and this is just a feeling) Kyle looked happy again when
he ran out for Bristol at the weekend. Can't remember seeing him
smile like that in a Quins shirt for quite a while - and his
body language really gives away how he's feeling. And he really
performed. Absolutely demolished his opposite number at his
first scrum and one of his first touches in open play was a
really nice tip on. He looked like he was enjoying himself again
- and I think a lot of what you can get from a player on the
pitch comes down to how happy they are within the environment
you set.
No environment is going to work for every player - changes in
the coaching setup and squad makeup are always going to have
knock-on effects with certain players feeling like they need to
move on because their mentors/mates have moved around and the
pieces of the jigsaw have changed. I just have a feeling that's
what's happened with Kyle and, to a lesser extent, Gabs (think
he also had a huge pay check dangled in front of him).

Well, at the start of new employment most people are keen and
fired up and ready to prove themselves. Mayhap when the
honeymoon period is over Kyle will see things differently, and
maybe he won't. But yes, I'm sure he's glad to be back playing
rugby, probably glad he's fit after a decent lay off, keen to
show what he can do, but I'm not sure one can read into that
Bristol Good Harlequins Bad. But he's a great talent, and it is
nice to see that on display.

The layoff is the key factor for me. He (along with a number of
players) was quite possibly knackered pre-covid. They played a
full season, went into an intensive World Cup camp, played in
the World Cup and came back into the league. There were mini
breaks but lockdown gave them a chance for meaningful downtime.

I agree that a number of players with very significant injury
have been able to take sufficient time to recover. Added to
which, all the players take such a battering week in week out
that it must have been good for all of them to have a long break
to recuperate. Having read the article about Dylan Hartley
yesterday I was astonished that he isn't receiving better health
care from his former team or the England set up.

Agree with both of the above. For all the bad that caused it, 5
months away from high impact collisions, rucks and scrums will
have done many professional rugby players a lot good not just in
terms of rest but also proper recovery and pain management. I
suspect that goes double for those in the front row.
Maybe I should have said that I personally was disappointed to
see Kyle go. He’s a special player who does things that create
tries. I do wonder if perhaps the combination of rugby
returning, a win against the second placed side and the team
doing well in the stuff we usually don’t, has led us all to take
a slightly rosey view of Fridays match. I completely understand
why, but we were rather blunt and will need to step up our
finishing pdq if we’re to push on.
Anyway, just to add a random bit of outright unsupported gossip
to the thread: I’ve heard a suggestion that Pablo Matera is
unhappy with the situation at Stade Français and may seek to
leave. If we did decide we needed to look for a replacement for
Robshaw, Matera would be an interesting (if expensive) option.

One thing I note about the weekend's results is that 4 of the 6
games went to the higher placed team in the table. Wasps beat
Saints, but were next to them in the table. We were the only
side that beat a team placed significantly above them, and I
think that in order to do that we came with a game plan based on
controlling the game. We conceded the fewest points of any team,
albeit with help from Sale's kicker, and we were first up with
the new interpretation at the breakdown. Sale, for all their
errors, also played a tighter game than many of the other teams.
It wasn't the night for running rugby, though when it was on we
showed some promise there as well.
What I take from that is "job done". It remains to be seen
whether we can maintain and build on that, and Sarries will be
wanting revenge for their hammering when we go to visit them, so
that will be a good test.
As for Matera, that might be a good shout. With both Robshaws
and Clifford now going, there ought to be some room in the cap
for a strong player - though we might need more than one to
replace their collective workrate...
