That's a squad of 44 plus academy isn't that a bit on the large
side

Few other examples of 1st XV Squads:
Bristol 38
Sale 34
Tigers 34
Bath 40
So yes, the Quins squad would seem to be large. Could be that
there are more academy players expected/ready to play 1st XV
rugby elsewhere. Or else the delay in Saffers coming over may
mean Gussie feels he needs more bodies.

We know 3 of those are short term
Van Wyk is injury cover so no need to replace when he goes
Robshaw - Not sure we will replace him. We have Dombrandt,
Chisholm, Clifford as first choice. Lawday, White and Evans as
back up (roughly, I think Evans may start). Then the academy
boys (Kenninham and Jurevicius) I think we will stick with that
and use injury cover if need. May depend on if PG thinks the
academy boys could do a job yet. We also have a couple of Lock
that have covered BR in their time.
Thomas - I think we will replace him (or he stays longer). 3 LHs
is not enough and Marler involved with England also.

But didn't Gussie go on about a smaller more streamlined squad
or words to that effect when he arrived. Just asking loik...

A couple things I noticed from that yt video of gussy.
That Toulouse prop is on a short term contract "initially"
Esterheiuzen is gonna be with us in 7-14 days

Yeah. I picked up on the same points. Sounds like van Wyk might
end up staying if he’s a hit.
When you take out the short term signings the squad is pretty
similar to most other clubs.
The other point I noticed from Gussy is about having the freedom
to make bigger signings - arguably Esterhuizen and Ashton are
the only ‘big names’, but Louw and Green are more exciting
signings than some of players we’ve acquired in recent years.

The definition of academy versus main squad is all due to nature
of contract and salary. There is a cap on academy contract
amounts and then count in main cap. So I think you should just
look at total numbers on books.
As someone said three players are short term contracts. So we
have about 40 players in main squad and probably about half of
the academy boys will not be even be considered for 1st team
rugby.
