The RFU used to fund Rugby Development Officers to run the Every
School project - aiming to give every state school pupil
exposure to rugby.
However, with the loss of income it is the first thing to be
cut.
It should of course be the last thing to be cut, but that would
mean reducing either the funding to Premiership clubs or the Gin
budget.

I am not sure it should be the last thing to be cut. The club
game, especially at mini and youth, is definitely harmed by the
RFU’s cuts, but the alternatives are to make cuts to a still
financially precarious professional game, or to the women’s game
and risk losing the ground that has been made there over the
last few years. I doubt the gin budget is material...
From a very hard nosed perspective, reducing support for the
community game will probably do less long term harm and be
easier to undo than making cuts anywhere else. In an ideal world
it shouldn’t be necessary to make a choice, but we live in a
world that’s far from ideal.
What might have been smarter by the RFU is not to have spent all
that money revamping the hospitality suites. They are very nice,
but the timing was - with the benefit of hindsight - awful.
Companies were cutting back on hospitality already, and the
COVID crisis will have dented that even further while also
destroying the conference market for the foreseeable future. The
East Wing looks rather like a White Elephant right now, but
without a time machine there’s not much the RFU can do.

The issue with the academy system is that it is club run, not
national. You could have a very good SH in South East, but third
choice and not be in academy. South West have no SH kid gets
lost...

Cadan Murley is ex Bishop Wordsworths School, I believe, as was
the wonderful Richard Hill. It's a great state school with
excellent rugby heritage.

As an ex pupil I can but only agree. Yes, Murley is ex-BWS.
