Academy intake

Pretty small intake with only three players but not surprising
given the quality of the current under 17s who I expect a fair
few will be given contracts

And heartbreak for those possibles not offered. It's a tough
moment for those boys (and their parents!).

Alex Shaw (who seems to know a bit about academy rugby) said
that there were surprises this intake (across the prem) with
players that maybe were expected to get deals, not getting them

I'm happy with that, as someone mentioned recently that they
weren't sure if there would be any EPDG players signed up.
Hopefully the club will do the right thing this season and
update the academy player profiles on the website. There is
still nothing on the players who joined this time last year.

Three is around average I think. Perhaps a little surprising not
to see Makeen Alikhan in there, but otherwise seems about right.
With Marcus Smith and Cadan Murley getting early senior
contracts, we actually only have 1 third year academy player
(George Head). So if all the current first and second year guys
get retained we would end up with 14 in the academy.
As OP mentioned, there are a few boys in the current under 17s
who already look like serious prospects for a years time.

Who are the more notable ones in the 17s?

Hasn't George Head turned out for us in the senior squad
already? Or am I mistaken?

Think Cleaves (wing), Bradley (inside centre), Hobson (prop) and
Benson (fly half) will be the main targets for contracts in
the under 17s. Potentially could lose Bradley to Wales which
would be a massive shame, very physically imposing and a great
offloading game.

Good list. I’d definitely add Kitan Ojo, another very useful
prospect on the wing. A possible in Nathan Jibulu (flanker) if
he can manage that tricky thing of turning physical dominance at
school boy level into effective play in men’s rugby.
Head has played for the senior team (which you’d expect in later
academy years) and I would imagine is already set for promotion
to the main squad next season.
Quins academy intake does come pretty exclusively from public
schools, though a lot of those players have moved there because
of rugby scholarships (often with some assistance from the
club). Quins pulled out of the AASE programme years ago
(basically a nominated state school or college supported by each
premiership club) because it wasn’t competitive enough and
tended to leave a lot of unsuccessful boys with oddball sports
related qualifications. Interestingly the only product of our
brief dabble in AASE is I believe one Joe Marler.
