The other reason to lock in key players on longer term contracts
at current levels is to ameliorate the threat of players looking
down the barrel of a pay cut, and weighing up the options for a
more lucrative deal in Japan or elsewhere. Yes, some have
England ambitions, but they have to weigh that against a
relatively short career, the vagaries of selection policy and
injury, and their financial obligations long term.

I believe their main gripe was with clubs trying to
automatically cut salaries of existing contracts without
consultation. You can see their point.

Listening to Lambert, it is the lack of communication around
salary cap drops.
With regards the new pay structure it is cleverly done so the
clubs that can afford the current cap and still spend up to same
amount. Bet this was the only way to get it through!
Now you are a club that can not afford cap! How do you remain
competitive- introduce 75% reduction. What can players do? Quit,
where do they go right now! Players were clearly not thought
about with this. Not saying reform was not needed, but
communication is key!
As he said some will be winners and some losers! But all clubs
will win!

There are two main elements to the drop in the salary cap that
will affect players - current contracts and future contracts. If
clubs try to force salary cuts in current contracts without
consultation and agreement from the players then the union will
have a case to pursue. If clubs offer reduced contracts in the
future players can sign them if they like or seek alternative
employment but either way it's not a matter for the union to
fight.
