7 Clubs rushing to sign contracts

According to Times this morning we are signing up players long
term in order to avoid new salary cap shortly coming in. If you
have players already signed only 75% of their salary counts in
the new cap according to John Westerby. It is us
Saints,Sarries,Bath,Bristol,Chiefs and Sale sounds like they are
already finding ways round new salary cap.

Well, to try and take the postives away, at least it means our
owners are continuing to support!

Sigh, professional rugby in England really does have morons
running it top to bottom. Their ability to snatch defeat from
the jaws of victory is spectacular.
I really thought that after the salary cap incidents and then
the accepting of the Myners report that maybe a token amount of
foresight had entered their thinking. Seems I was wrong.

I dont think its a way around the cap, all the clubs know the
score, they can all do the same. Its more a case of some clubs
being able to afford to and some not being able to.

It is. I didnt say it was right, just responding to the
statement it was a way around the cap.

The cap has rules. These are new rules that have a loophole
allowing clubs to stay within the cap without having to cut
either their squad size or their players' pay. The financial
sense and fairness of using the loophole is debatable, but the
big difference is that this is within the rules.
Personally, I'm a bit conflicted. We need the clubs to be
financially sustainable, and most of them aren't at the moment.
But the other reason for the cap is financial fair play, which
is why when the axe fell on Saracens it fell hard.
If some clubs are going to do it and its within the scope of the
rules, I'd rather Quins were in the group that are doing it than
face a couple of seasons where we are at a disadvantage to clubs
that have done it.

Myners said that whatever system you put in place, you'll never
be able to close all loopholes, and clubs had to therefore
adhere to the spirit as well as the letter if the system is
going to work. Disappointing that Quins, like many others, have
already decided to go against the spirit. Unless this is
something all the clubs discussed when voting on the new system
and everyone was happy with it.

I think that this is just a tactic to avoid having to actively
reduce players current salaries.
It is really difficult to force a player to take a cut
mid-contract. The employer would be in breach.
So, the only other option is to wait until contacts expire and
then re-negotiate at a lower rate.
- which would leave a bad feeling for the players who were just
unlucky that their contacts were currently expiring.
So, this way, they can keep all their current players sweet and
they can then recruit people on lower salaries.
I think it makes sense. The salary cap will come in, but it
won't be a sharp, sudden drop.
I think there is an added benefit though. Players will be less
likely to switch clubs for higher wages.
Also, wages are frozen for x years.
Therefore, there will be no wage inflation.
