His scrummaging in Argentina was some of the best I have seen in
the international arena, if your metric is delivering a stable
platform rather than trying to milk the scrum for penalties. I
fear his style may be out of line with where Eddie's coaching
philosophy is going - but we saw against South Africa in the RWC
Final that having a solid scrum is critical.
I'd like to see him cement a position as Quins' first choice
tighthead, and that will give him a platform to get noticed.

Agreed.
His biggest problem is that he doesn’t do enough outside of the
scrum to outshine other players. I rate Collier, but if PG
thought he was genuine first choice material, we probably
wouldn’t have signed Louw.

Not sure about that last bit. Given injuries and call ups it's
sensible these days to have at least two top class players in
each of the front row positions. We've run with two capped
England internationals for the last 3 years, Louw just replaces
one international with another. Collier has struggled a bit with
injury and Sinckler's meteoric (and deserved) rise, but I'd hope
that with an extended break to get fit Collier will go into the
season fighting for the 3 shirt rather than the 18 one.

I actually think his biggest problem is he doesn't do enough IN
the scrum to outshine other players. You could make a strong
case for him if he was demolishing all-comers, but he hasn't
been.

In training, he has been working with the best scrummaging loose
head on the planet as well as being coached by a 100+ cap
international. If he's not going to be able to find his best
form with that setup, when will he? And I'm a former tight head
who had to figure out how to improve on my own.
He has the ability, just needs the belief.

It’s no longer a tighthead’s job to “demolish all comers” in the
scrum. Since they removed the hit, the tighthead is much more of
an anchoring role - the job is to resist whatever is thrown at
you [1].
[1] Unless you are in a team coached by Warren Gatland, in which
case your job is to milk as many scrum penalties as you can.

Sure. But given he doesn't offer much outside the scrum, then
not being able to dominate scrums is a problem.

That’s possible I guess.
I still think of him as a ‘young’ player who’s still developing
but he’s 29 now and should really be making a more obvious case
to be first choice. I might be presently surprised, but I expect
Louw to start with Collier as an able deputy.
Even then, IMO Kerrod arguably added a bit more as a bench
option once he settled in and I wouldn’t be totally surprised to
see him in the 18 shirt.

Harsh to blame Gatland. That seems to be the aim these days,
which is why scrums are becoming a painful waste of time.
