Think he caught Smith
There you go, Mercer. Back Row or Wing...

I think I am actually getting my games mixed up.
But, you are correct, I was thinking about Mercer
"As well as highlighting his pace and heart, Mercer’s 79th
minute chase of Quins' fresh fly-half Marcus Smith to save a
try, when almost everyone else had given up, epitomised his
exemplary attitude and enthusiasm for the game."
Bath's 20-5 defeat at Harlequins in March 2018.

So you don't like wonder tries or hype. Hmm...
Funny thing is I think you have your point a bit backwards. The
regular criticism of the current number of subs is that it means
defences don't tire so much and we don't see games opening up as
a result.

A young tall back row catching a young short fly half (who can't
maintain pace beyond half a pitch) is impressive but not a
miracle. Have that race in five years time and I doubt that
Mercer would be able to repeat it. None of that takes away from
what he did that day. However, he's probably too short to
double as a second row, and he's as much of a wing as Tom Guest
was. He's the sort of player I was thinking of when I suggested
forwards having a shorter career (though his ability across the
back row would count in his favour). Second rows who can play
back row would most likely be favoured over back rows who can
play second row.
Noted back row/second row Matt Luamanu, however... (insert
appropriate emoji here)

TBH, I was only joking. I put it down to Mercer being a little
less knackered than Smith.

Jammy I think this is something that I think, but I am having
difficulty putting into words. Let me think about it for a bit
and then try to explain again.

Was a game at The Stoop. In Marcus's first year.
