We wouldn't all get deafened by shouts of "not straight ref!" at
       every scrum?

       Why would that change?
Do you really think people shout “forward” for every opposition
pass because they think it’s a forward pass?
I think Jammy asks a valid question.

Simple, down the middle ref's used to police it and still do
where my boy plays, or continue having League scrums and maybe
reduce the players in the scrum....
       Just a thought...

But how would it alter the mess we currently have?

Apologies for trying to be light-hearted.
       I must be more serious.

Good luck getting the TMO to check on a at straight feed at the
scrum, they can't even effectively communicate about off side
       during the game!

Please enlighten me.Why would any prop deliberately collapse a
scrum knowing he risks a penalty?Dont a lot of scrums collapse
involuntarily as opposed to deliberate. As a former 15 require
       education

I wonder if one answer (and it sounds like heretical rugby
league) would be to have just one person in the back row. With
two people less pushing, the likelihood of collapse is less
since there'll be less power coming through the front rows. Not
sure what you do with the spares from the back row. Get rid of
them completely, go to a 13 man game? More space, less people,
more running rugby? Stick them with the forwards? Or directly
       behind the scrum?
Trouble is the game looks too rugby league with 13.
In the same way a team can give numbers for a line out, it can
give numbers for a scrum? 3,5,6,8?

The skulduggery that goes on in the scrum is a mystery to most
of us but I would guess that they collapse because the props are
trying to make it look like their opponents have done it.
Especially if they have been bested earlier. From what I
understand, you draw back slightly just before the shove comes
on and your opponent goes long and goes to the floor thus giving
away the penalty. It’s a difficult area to penalise as there is
so much that can be done to gain an advantage that you can’t
       see.
