My cat says it's the fault of the government and the opposition
for not opposing the government well enough.

I know what you mean, but I still think there'd be a big spiky

Indeed. The Y axis is a linear scale, gradated in multiples of
5,000. If you started the plot at 0 rather than 5,000, you'd
move everything up. The spike would still be there, showing the
difference from the 2010-2019 Max/Mean/Min.

As we can’t go back and do everything again with somebody else
in charge to see if they could have done a better job, it is
pointless to say “we would have “ because anybody saying that is
saying it after it’s happened. Hindsight I think it’s called.
Each of the governments we’ve had have made errors. Continually
blaming the government for not being as good as all the other
countries is also a very negative attitude. Each country is
different in culture, population make up, specialist industries
and political persuasions . It is typical that all we hear about
are the few bad things and not the huge number of good and
positive stuff that is happening. The information is also
confusing as there seem to be many experts all saying different
things.

True. The way it is framed creates ambiguity in interpretation
of the historic mean, not the spike.

of social distancing in various areas/countries too.

Social distancing is not the same for all countries. The WHO
suggest that people need be only 1 metre apart

The USA - 6 feet
Germany 1.5m
New Zealand - 2m
The thing that may seem counterintuative is that a reduced
distance could be beneficial. The real challenge is that with a
deadly disease, you can't do things like A/B testing as you are
playing with people's lives.
E.g. in an ideal world with a less serious condition, you could
take 2 towns that are essentially similar (off the top of my
head Barnsley and Doncaster). You make 1 town with 1.5m and one
town with 2.5m. Give it 6 months and analyse. Or even 3 towns
with 2m, 1m and one with no guideline. But, you can't do this as
we need the answer now and experimenting on actual people is not
acceptable under any circumstance.
The difficulty with all this is if the authorities of a country
give a guide of say, 1.5m, and is in later found out that the
better distance is actually 2m and as a result of their
guidance, x thousand more died, then the authorities of that
country will probably be challenged over their guidance for
years to come.

Rugby can only resume when life is back to normal, says Exeter's
Rob Baxter
Rob Baxter, director of rugby at Premiership leaders Exeter
Chiefs, has warned against “forcing” a return of the
professional game, insisting the league should only restart when
social distancing measures are eased for society as a whole, not
just for sport.
The Professional Game Board met on Thursday to discuss a
potential return to action ahead of a meeting of medical
officials from major sports bodies with the Department of
Culture, Media and Sport to work on detailed proposals.
Premiership Rugby has contingency plans in order to finish the
season behind closed doors, including testing players and
quarantining them in one hotel to reduce the risk of infections.
Baxter is keen to complete the season, however he has cautioned
against attempts to rush back, given the physical contact
involved in rugby union, including scrummaging and tackling.
“I think trying to force something to happen without it being
part of normal life would be very difficult,” Baxter said. “I
think that is why probably rugby will only resume playing once
you can actually walk down the street and people are relatively
comfortable and can walk into a shop and stand next to something
because it is exactly the same scenario.
“I don’t see how you can have a group of 30 or 40 people, which
is what a travelling rugby squad will be, driving through
Exeter, jumping on a bus travelling to London and mingling with
another 30 or 40 people unless that is a pretty commonplace
thing and is something the government deems to be a manageable
risk.
“Until we are at the stage where you can talk about 50 people
being in a building and mingling and that is deemed to be
acceptable in the way things get back, it is going to be very
hard to say it can only happen in sport but it can’t happen in
any other area.”
Baxter also dismissed the concept of players staying together in
a hotel for up to nine weeks in order to complete the season if
games are allowed to return behind closed doors at the end of
June.
“Things that are being thrown out there at the moment as
possibilities,” added Baxter. “I don’t think a long-term
isolation camp will work for Premiership teams because no one
could afford it. Which Premiership team could afford to go into
an eight-or-nine week camp with everything being paid for in a
hotel?
“When you look at where the clubs are talking about where they
stand financially, what are the costs of putting 12 clubs
together? It is not like a football team – you are talking about
a minimum of 36 players plus support staff, so around 60 people
per club, you are getting towards a 1,000 people. Where is the
finance for that for eight weeks of three or four meals a day?
“You would also need five or six training venues. I could be
completely wrong, someone could step forward and say it is
financially viable but I can’t see it myself. We aren’t
football. I could see football potentially making it financially
viable but I can’t see professional rugby making it viable. I
think it would cost us more than we could get back.”
Baxter said his club instead were preparing to “flick the
switch” to return to phased training and playing in a structured
and well-managed fashion, and any of his players’ concerns about
returning to play would be addressed on an individual basis.
“We will make sure when players turn up that everything will
have been adhered to that needs to be and that their best
interests are first and foremost and look after them as
individuals,” Baxter added. “Also, as people involved in sport,
we should not take ourselves too seriously.
“We have to prepare to be that flexible – have that ability to
start to get ready and then ease off again. We have to realise
there is something a bit bigger going on than what we are doing.
We are on the periphery of what really is important.”

Social distancing - a huge difference between indoors and
outdoors surely? On a rush hour train into London or strolling
along Brighton Beach? The requirement is wrong for one of those
situations.

It seems that the virus is much more likely to be transmitted by
touch than in the air. So dont let anybody cough on your hands.
