Okay
So, in hindsight -
Suppose that in 2016 the government invested billions in PPE and
apparatus for intensive care units and Covid-19 hadn't happened.
We would now be hauling the government over the coals for not
spending that money on housing, education, etc.
At no point did I hear during any comments on any budget from
any opposition party that the government should be allocating
more funding towards pandemic defence.

Unfortunately, it's other people who have to bear the
consequences of those decisions.

I agree, but some of the other posters on here seem to believe
in the freedom of the individual. Unless the individual behaves
in a way that they don't like, in which case they are
selfish/misguided/ignorant etc.
The position that "if Quins play then I'll make up my own mind
whether or not to attend, I'm not happy with being told what to
do" does ignore the consequence of that decision to anyone
except the individual.
I would be happy to let everyone decide what they want to do,
but then to pay the cost of their decision themselves.

Yes, it's the fault of the opposition. What fools they are.
Thankfully they haven't been in power for the last decade and
got to make any of the decisions during that time.
This isn't a political football. If this was any government, and
they were unprepared for this, then they should be called to
account. Or is it the fact that it's a Conservative government
being criticised that is upsetting you?

Where do you want to go with criticism? If the last Labour
government hadn't saddled the NHS with financially crippling
PFIs, then stockpiling PPE would have been financially viable?
Or is it only ok to bash Tories?

government is that their website fell over. It is that there are
30000-40000 people dead in this country. I am not saying that is
the fault of the government, but there are other countries where
the decisions and actions of other governments have led to much
lower rates of deaths compared to their overall populations. If
our government ignored advice or information that could have
reduced this number then it is reasonable to ask them to explain
why - not now, when they correctly have other priorities, but
once this critical period has passed.

Which government would have saved those lives? People die every
day. Unfortunately, published figures show people dying WITH
CoronaVirus, not necessarily FROM the virus. It's been said that
one of the many factors involved in related deaths is diabetes,
caused by obesity. Is it the government's fault when someone is
overweight?

You seem to be being deliberately obtuse.
What I am saying (in my own mind very clearly) is that there was
no political party that has put - "spend x billion on pandemic
preparation" as a main point in their manifestos.
I am not bashing Labour for not challenging the government at
previous budgets.
I don't think that any party has considered pandemic planning to
be the most important activity that it should be doing.
Whereas, clearly, it should have been.
But, that is where hindsight comes in and gives us perfect 20/20
vision.

Every country records the numbers differently. Some measure died
of, some died with, some if they think they had Corona, some
only in hospitals, some also outside of hospitals. I am not
saying who is correct, how they should measure or anything else.

It's interesting to debate who is at fault. I saw Alan Johnson
on Sky News a few days ago, and he seemed surprised about how
unprepared the NHS / Department of Health was. He said that one
of the first exercises they were going through when he became
Secretary of State for Health was the contingency for a
situation like this. It is not to say that they will get it
completely right as it is difficult to predict exactly what
Virus will emerge, but some of the basic stuff like PPE should
have been available. I also was lucky enough (?) to attend a
talk from an MD of a company that lost 90% of his staff when the
twin towers went down. They as a company did a great deal of
contingency planning - but his closing comment was that what
ever you plan for in a disaster scenario it will never be
enough. My final observation (for what worth) is that democracy
is a great thing. But the downside is that we all vote in 630
amateurs every 4 - 5 years to manage 40% + of our economy. While
they set the strategy, they also have to rely significantly on
the Civil Servants and (in this case) the NHS administration to
guide them. I suspect much of the questioning post this pandemic
will (ought?) to be directed there. Sorry to rattle on!

I work for a company who has a contingency planning team. We do
regular tests and simulations for a potential disaster - e.g.
plane crash near office.
However, a number of years ago, we actually had to implement it
(due to a contractor working on a set of traffic lights outside
the main office building cutting through the main electricity
supply and phone lines to the building with a mini digger).
Despite all the preparation and testing we had done, we realised
just how unprepared we were. Basically, we had never tested for
this actual disaster.
