Unprecedented Times Call For Challenging Decisions

Unprecedented times call for challenging decisions says Lawrie
Dalrymple
HTML https://www.quins.co.uk/news/unprecedented-times-call-for-challenging-decisions/
Well, that's fair - isn't it? Everybody loses 25%, can't argue
with that, can you, surely?
Well, it means that the player on £400,000 will lose (gross)
£100,000. Wow! That's a chunk, but what about the person in the
office on... I dunno what's the minimum wage £15,000? A loaf of
bread, or a pint of milk is the same price in the shop, no
matter how much, or little, you earn. Surely, they won't be able
to reduce wages below the minimum, will they?

What about this bit
"We will look after our lowest earners and those facing
financial difficulty".

If offered I would be willing to donate any refund of ST for
this season to the lowest earners. I am not well off but luckily
my wage is not effected by the current situation and if it helps
some else get close to their normal wage even for 1 month I’d be
happy with that.

DC said on this week's BBC Rugby Union podcast that only those
earning a salary over a certain level would be taking a 25% pay
cut.

Ive not seen the detail on this , just the headlines , but I had
assumed was that they would reduce their salaries by 25 % while
the Club was not operational and they weren't playing / training
, not backdated for the whole season ?
Hopefully those deemed non essential now will be supported by
the Govt Furlough Scheme

They are being fully paid until end of March. The better paid
take the discount from April onwards.

I read the CEO's missive with complete and utter disbelief
having spent the last two weeks trying to save a long standing
business and the jobs of 20 people.
The answer is simple and at no cost to Quins, or any other
premiership club. Put all the players, coaches and admin staff
on 'Furlough'. Share the pain like the rest of the world.
The pampered players are now no different to everyone else in
the UK. They will be isolated at home with no work to do - other
than chat on a mobile to some Quins supporters also stuck at
home.
Like everyone else the players would then also be on the
government backed deferment of mortgages and other outgoings
until we go back to work. At least they will have a job to go
back to.
Like you and me, all they have to do is buy food, hand-wash and
loo rolls, stream stuff off Netflix and go for a jog once a day
for the duration.
The £2,500 each month that the government will pay on Furlough
(not the club) will guarantee the players should still manage to
afford a regular supply of prawn canopies washed down with a
slightly cheaper occasional bottle of champers.
Get real Mr Dalrymple, and the other premiership chairman -
didn't you just receive £20m each from CVC or some similar hedge
fund.

Well Wasps have got a £1.1 million dividend due to be paid in
May on their bond. How earth they will pay that I can’t imagine.
If Directors don’t cough up we could loose a Premiership team

So, that's why Mr Dalrymple's letter suggested that giving up
the dividend on the Quins bond was something everyone should do.
Presumable the money men of Wasps and Quins knew exactly what
the risks were when setting up these schemes. There were
certainly many sceptics on this board.
As with any loan (or contract of employment) they can negotiate
a deferred payment with some short term incentive to the
beneficiary to agree.
Maybe offer a meaningful shareholding in Quins plc. - rather
than expect charity again. Pass some of the ownership or equity
back to the real supporters.
