I really don't know why the South African Rugby Football Union
didn't join the 5 Nations in 1992 when we were returned from
isolation. Yes, I understand that the rugby of Australia and New
Zealand was of a higher quality back then, but from a business
sense of view the 5 Nations made much more sense.

I guess because union is a winter sport so at the time, the
competitions were arranged by hemisphere

Flights direct are around 600 quid.
When in SA, the difference in exchange rate, means we get huge
bang for our pounds.

I am unsure that the other unions would have wanted SA to join
back then. Considering that the players were amateur.
Players would have gone to work as normal on the Friday.
Travelled to Heathrow after work.
Taken the overnight flight of approximately 12 hours.
Slept on the plane. Arrived in Joburg at approximately 10:00am
Cleared customs, etc and then to Ellis Park for around noon.
Had three hours to have lunch and acclimatise to the 30-35
degree heat that can be experienced in Feb in Joburg.
Learned how to cope with the thin air at 1724m above sea level.
Played a hard game against the Boks in the afternoon. Gone to
the post match dinner etc.
Relaxed on Sunday before taking the evening flight back and
arriving back in the UK for 7:00am.
Quick change and back to work.
It is obviously now different in the pro era. People can travel
sooner an prepare for the different conditions. Also, players
are fitter and so the temp difference and altitude has less
effect.
Realistically though, few NH teams would win under these
conditions played on the high veld.
Playing in Cape Town would be better. But the Cape can be
hotter during Feb and can experience 40 degree heat.
Playing in Durban during the summer would be hard work. The
humidity is difficult to cope with.
So, your choices are:
Heat or Humidity or Altitude

Other factors include , what will happen to the Rugby
Championship teams down under. It would end all the tours for
all six countries. Also the Autumn international games between
the six. The seasons have been mentioned.

The game is due a big realignment.
Sa will join for the money a d for the other reasons.mentioned.
I think Australia / NZ / Fiji / Samoa / Argentina / Japan maybe
Tonga could be the idea moving forward. The Japanese alone can
drive the commercial side of it and need to after the highly
successful world cup.
