MM: I cant prove one way or another that Cricket "sold its soul"
to Sky - seems somewhat hyperbolic to me - but the game has not
declined dramatically, especially in this country. Roughly
10,000 fans went to Galle/Sri Lanka 15 months ago - how many
English Rugby fans went to England Rugby's last tour to
Argentina or how many plan to go to Japan this summer? Nowhere
near that many. Cricket is alive and kicking, especially County
T20 and international cricket of any type (i.e. the cricket that
Sky generally supports/offers).
More generally: before worshipping at the alter of CVC, ask F1
fans what they did to their sport:-

Can't argue that the sport needs more support, but I'm not
convinced that CVC will be the knight in shining armour - more
like the night CVC ran off with all the money.

The reason I say cricket sold it's soul in this country at least
is due to the fact that the ECB took SKY's money and took
international cricket away from terrestrial TV resulting in our
national summer sport being unavailable to thousands of
potential young players. This is compounded by the fact that the
ECB make millions from Test and one-day international cricket
using the counties players and the counties grounds (with the
exception of Lord's which is owned by the MCC) but give a
pittance back to the counties themselves which has now resulted
in the County Championship the sport's flagship competition
being sidelined to basically a spring and autumn competition so
that summer cricket can consist of increasingly ridiculous short
forms of the game (like the ludicrous Hundred) in order to make
the money that the counties should have been given in the first
place.
Not that it annoys me as you can no doubt tell!

I see the sponsors of the 6N are supposed to be jittery about
this. If you're paying £xm a year for millions to see your name
on the side of the pitch, it's a bit of a come down to talking
about hundreds of thousands. If they then negotiate reduced
sponsorship rates, then perhaps all you've done is lost an
audience.

Perhaps that's part of the problem already. Didn't the last
round of sponsorship bids for the 6N bring in far less money
from the Burnt Malt Stout drink than it had previously received
from the bank now known as NatWest?
Maybe the attempt to get more money from TV is a result of some
of the sums not adding up with the already reduced sponsorship.
I agree with the general point about smaller audience, smaller
sponsorship though.

Hasn't the sponsorship been hard to sell at the moment? I read
the Guinness have got a 6-year sponsorship deal that is 8m £ a
year less than the old one with RBS or whoever it was. They only
pay 6m £ for the first few years but then it rises.
As a sport, we need to increase the money coming into the game.
As we know all clubs are in debt and the RFU are slashing
budgets left right and centre. Rugby players, in general, are
underpaid compared to there football cousins and other sport
like NFL.
I'm happy to pay 9£ a day to watch the game at home via Now TV,
if the money is put back into the game.

There was an interesting point made by Barnes on The Ruck
podcast in that viewing numbers are skewed for satellite TV as 1
dish is counted as 1 viewer, even if it is 40 or 50 people in a
pub. Sky/BT at least know how many set top boxes are watching
the BBC/ITV just extrapolate from a sample of 5000 people
watching at home.

Fair enough and I agree about the Hundred.
I had the pleasure recently to meet and chat with ECB Colin
Graves for a couple of hours at a wedding last year and his
intentions are good - that the Hundred will add significantly to
the Counties via the franchised teams. I asked him whether this
would dilute the T20s and he hoped it would complement them. I
guess we’ll see, but 4-day county games don’t draw in the
crowds, so they have to try something and hope that the new
format will be as attractive as The Big Bash or the IPL. He
leaves the post later this year in November. He’s a jolly good
egg from Yorkshire and it was fascinating taking to him.
