At half-time on Saturday, instead of following the players into
the dressing room, the coaches all stood in a group in the
centre of the pitch having an intense tactical discussion -
which I thought was unusual at the time. Gustard was pointing
animatedly to the (normally muddy) corner of the Dyson stand and
it seemed pretty clear from his gestures that he was indicating
that with the wind behind us in the 2nd half, we should kick for
the corner behind Rokoduguni and play in their 22. I don't
recall Smith or anyone else putting in a succession of diagonal
kicks in the 2nd half. Maybe that's what he was referring to ?

Someone is certainly clueless. But I'm not sure it's Gustard.

Has Chris Boyd lost the respect of the Saints players? They lost
by 50. No. Same here.
Just because you don’t do what you spoke about doesn’t mean it
was a rebellion against the coach that you’ve lost respect for.
Well that’s my opinion anyway.

I must say that I haven't been impressed with Smith's game
management when the weather is less than perfect. This is an
area that he needs to work on. I would like to see Herron
getting an occasional start so that we can see what he can do.

At least Smith was making an effort to keep a low trajectory on
his first half kicks last week, unlike the clueless Landajo and
Morris. Plus his tactical kicking/game management against
Worcester was noticeably good.

Agree, although i'm a bit torn between "its just a lot of
unlucky injuries" and "there's always an excuse for poor
performance, every season." A few years ago we used to have 5 or
6 players away for 6N....now we only have 2 props away but all
our backs are made of tissue paper. After seemingly turning a
corner last season we are going backwards again and now facing
losing the Robshaws, Sink (although he's seemingly checked out
already!) and at best one more season of MB. Will the loss and
decline of our 'big' players be the excuse for next season?
Are we really unlucky or just not 'making our own luck' through
poor coaching/training/fitness/recruitment and a culture of
mediocrity?
I really don't know, but i'll give PG another year myself....

Morale is low, caused by injuries and absences and a lack of
consistency. But we have a get-out-of-jail card (no relegation
for all except Them) this year and the coaching team are
certainly seeing what the whole squad can do/not do. It's
certainly very frustrating after 5 or so seasons of mediocrity.
Hopefully, the increased game time will have an affect in the
medium to long term and next season, we'll have a more mature
squad, many of whom will have played with each other in many
different combinations. Additionally, after the rest of this
season and next season's pre-season, the skills and game plans
the coaching team want to install in the squad will (hopefully!)
have had more traction.

I am wondering if we need a change to the fitness and
conditioning team. Every year we seem to have an injury crisis,
more frequently than other teams.
When we manage to put a run of games together with the same
squad, we're pretty competitive (and let's face it - an LBP
against Bath away would have been an OK result if we hadn't lost
to Irish), but it's so rare we have the same players fit each
week. You can afford to change one or two each game, but it's 5
or 6 at the moment and that hurts cohesion.

But is that true, or do other teams also suffer a similar level
of injuries? Is it just that we're unlucky in that it seems to
be so many key players?

I think Gustard is still a great DoR and he deserves our
support, until it's obvious that we're miles off.
The reality is that we blow hot and cold more often than other
teams.
Consistency is hard when you loose so many players to injury,
plus I genuinely believe that we still have some dead wood that
hasn't been moved on yet.
Whilst James Chisholm is great player for Quins, sadly his
brother Ross isn't the player he once was IMHO - lost pace and
hasn't seem to develop his game to a level we'd expect.
I'm not so sure about Morris either - without Brown we're really
scuppered at 15 IMHO.
The silver lining seems to be that some young players have had
exposure and stepped up which will stand them in good stead for
next season.
I'm not expecting too much from the rest of the season but I
fully expect 20/21 season to be a make or break year for Gussy,
irrespective of Robshaw and some other stalwarts having left.
If we haven't really stepped up consistently and aren't in the
top 4 by end of May 2021, then I suspect the board will be
looking to make management changes.
Having said that, until that point, Gustard should have our full
support.
