I don't agree with all of that, but it's a pretty fair analysis.
The cap doesn't really allow for graceful exits, and it doesn't
allow teams to pay as much for players who are reaching the end
of their careers.

I think Quins would have been willing to pay Robbo one more
decent 2yr contract (maybe not matching his current deal) but I
think it's more about Robbo wanting to go to NY. Why would Quins
not offer their 33yr captain who is no longer away on
International duty a decent (if not bumper) pay deal.

Maybe there needs to be a recognition that after 12 years
service to one club, you can get cap credits like you can with
academy players?
Take the pressure off of clubs having to lose Robshaws, Marlers,
Browns, Cares etc just because they play beyond 30 years of age.

You get an allowance every season for those who have come right
through from Academy so Brown, Marler and Robo £50,000 I think.
I did read read most of the PRL regs and it is in there!

I agree with most of that. I'm not sure that there needs to be a
credit for someone who's been at a club for so many years. It's
a tough decision, but it's the same as a lot of decisions a club
has to make regarding the cap. Do you justify paying a lot of
money for a player at the end of his career, who won't be away
with England and is still playing very well, in the hope that he
stays fit and his abilities don't suffer a sharp drop off, or do
you spend the money on a couple of promising younger players.
There will be stuff that Chris adds to both the club and squad
that go beyond just what he does on the pitch, such as his
influence on younger players, the example he sets, etc. But is
that of enough value to justify the extra £100,00 that he
presumably demands.
It's a great shame to see him leaving, but I'm glad it's on his
own terms and he's going out at the top of his game, not forced
to retire early like JTH or Lowe, or hobbling to the end of the
season like Horwill

One take I hadn't thought of is that this might have come at
Chris's own instigation.
Gussy said in his tribute clip that he would never have asked
either Robshaw to leave, and there are two ways to take that:
there was an offer on the table, but it wasn't a good one. Or
there was an offer on the table, but the Robshaws collectively
made the choice to free up the room in the cap rather than
constrain the club.
I don't know how plausible that is, but it would absolutely be
in keeping with the style of the man.

Let's just match the $35k he'll get in the MLR. Maybe deduct the
travel expenses he'll savr.

That's what he'll get paid for playing - but I think their cap
allows the clubs to pay a lot more for appearances, coaching,
marketing etc.
Come to think of it, that would suit Nigel Wray to a tee. Will
we see USAracens in a couple of seasons?
