according to Reddit it only covers the 3 months of the season,
and players can be paid for media and other things out of
season:

It's also an amount that he could still command in one month for
personal appearances etc...

Didn't realise it was such a short season. In that case I guess
it makes a bit more sense. Go over, get some cash for playing a
short season. Get extra for other work, have a fun time living
part time in NYC for a couple of years

Even so, $45/£35K isn't much, but the 3rd Robshaw, Mrs Robshaw,
can make up the (singing salary) slack, presumably...

The regular MLR season is 4 months long this year. They've gone
with a similar conference system to the one used in the P14.
There's 2 conferences of 6 teams each. Every team will play home
& away against the teams in their conference, and once against
teams in the other conference. It kicks off this weekend &
regular season finishes end of May.
The title is then decided by taking the top 3 teams in each
conference. #2 plays #3 in each conference. Winner of that plays
the #1 team from that conference, and winner of that game goes
on to the final.

$45,000 is what I read but not enough to live in NYC so must be
more involved than that. Of course Camilla may want to go over
there and could be good way of getting Green cards.

Maybe he'll have more success than he did at getting yellow and
red cards.
