Mehrtens was in his twilight but played well, agree Rocker, and
gave a lot of time to the supporters post games etc. His pace
had gone but his kicking from hand was something else. He would
always spiral his touch finders (rarely seen today) and I can
still see one cutting through the wind and rain at the Stoop,
not with the usual golfer’s draw, but arrow straight to touch
well beyond the half way.

too Lawday.

Estherhuizen could be a magnificent addition to a three-quarters
line with Smith and Marchant. But other than NEv, no high
profile signing has delivered in the last 15 years - and I would
not describe Gomars as especially high profile, though he was
very good for us

Without knowing how much we are paying for players it's
difficult to speculate on whether they living up to
expectations. Goneva is 35 and I'm confident we're not paying
him like he was 25. Signing big names past their prime is fine
under the right circumstances - you are buying a lot of
experience at the expense of some of their skills.
Saili - injuries aside - is in his prime so we are probably
paying top whack which is an issue. Some of our long term
senior players probably aren't value for money any more.
We did pretty well out of Horwill who had suffered a big dip in
form in Australia. The fact he fought his way back in to the
Wallabies shows how well he went.
Mind you, we did sign De Wet Barry :D

De Wet Barry is unfairly remembered for his red card tackle on
Mat Tait - which was actually expunged by the citing commission
as they saw that Tait had stumbled immediately before the
tackle. At least Barry played and added some grit to the line.
Goneva, I think, has been signed as a backup winger given all
the injuries we had at the start of the season. He's probably on
a contract that is based on a relatively low number of games.
But he has been pressed into service more than we might have
expected and has done the job. He's not what he once was, but I
would be very surprised if we hired him on that basis.

Wasn’t talking about how much Goneva is being paid, was
referring to his reputation and profile. A rare household name
(within rugby circles) signing from Quins. Maybe we can’t expect
much from him at this stage in his career but he still hasn’t
delivered, though I agree that he wasn’t bought to revolutionise
our back line or anything

Bothma has disappeared as well. I know his wife had visa
problems but . . .

He seems to be playing mostly A games. I suspect he will be
leaving at the end of his contract. It's a shame that we didn't
see the best of him, due to his arm snapping too many times, and
leaving it looking like it's a bad mecanno project.

Seem to remember Gommars had a falling out with Gloucester &
ended up without a contract before we picked him up. The guy was
an absolute legend & a fantastic signing.

Now living in Twickenham and playing for your local junior club
(not Amateurs)!
And let's not forget Saili spent most of the season before we
signed him injured.
