Surely Desperate Dan must go down as the biggest ever waste of
       money.

Mo was an international but playing League because he couldn't
get a contract; Gomars was playing pub rugby because he couldn't
get a contract; Danny was, IIRC, in the Leeds academy but had
just been relegated; Ollie Kohn had a crocked knee; Mike Ross
had been thrown on the scrapheap by Ireland; no-one had ever
heard of Dombrandt; Easter was playing for Orrell.
OK, maybe Mo and Gomars weren't unheralded, but they weren't
       playing pro rugby.
I agree we're a mixed bag in terms of duds and gems - but to my
mind our hit rate among relative unknowns has been much higher
than among big name signings. One day when I have time, perhaps
I'll go back through the signings for a few years and see if
       that hunch bears out.

Is everyone forget Geo Cronje I’m not sure he even touched down
in the UK let alone put the 1/4s.

Geo Cronje did come to England and the Stoop. But what everyone
(Doctors in South Africa and England) had thought was a simple
minor medical issue turned out to be career ending for poor GC.
When he found out he insisted on cancelling his contract and
refused to take any further money to which he was entitled.

Yes I heard that on the pod too. Huge waste of money if true. I
seen to recall concerns when we signed him from Munster (?)
where I think he'd spent a lot of time injured. Just not durable
enough for N Hemisphere rugby? Talented, creative and
experienced player, he should have been a good signing but for
       the injury breaks....

I agree with this entire thread. Goneva the latest prime example
of a high-profile much-heralded signing who fails to live up to
       his billing.
Meanwhile Lewies - very much seen as a consolation prize after
we failed to land Snyman - has been a very capable signing. So
       too Lawday.
Hoping Nakawara comes to fruition and bucks the trend, and
Estherhuizen could be a magnificent addition to a three-quarters
line with Smith and Marchant. But other than NEv, no high
profile signing has delivered in the last 15 years - and I would
not describe Gomars as especially high profile, though he was
       very good for us

To be fair Cronje came with a knee injury sustained in the Tri
nations (as it was then I think) that he was expected to recover
from but which turned out to be more serious than expected and I
seen to recall he paid back his money, might be wrong though?
Anyway there's also Merthens who was no slouch and still came
even if we were in ND1 and played very well for s couple of
years. Paved the way for NEv one might even suggest?

Danny must have played England U20 surely? My point is, we are
at least as good as uncovering duds as we are hidden
gems.....there’s a long long list that’s not worth starting as
this thread might go all wrong!

centres, but injury, lack of game time and a general lack of
team form have, I’d suggest, robbed him of showing that extra
bit of class he has. So far, at least, although he was excellent
       Bath away last season.

Yes Sailli showed so much promise in the cameo that was his 1st
appearance at the Stoop in a pre season vs Jersey Reds I think,
far more than Desperate Dan ever had for us and I think it made
the Welsh waster buck up a bit in his 2nd and thankfully final
       season with us
