Sure it’s the press. They made up what the police charged him
with and how he pleaded guilty.

Funny, I don't remember saying that at all. There were reports
in the press of him punching/striking police though - it was
made to sound like he was much more the aggressor than it seems
he was, because of course we know his history and we'll be
easily led to believe he's more villain than idiot. What he was
was definitely idiot, don't get me wrong.

Well they had charged him with assaulting an officer.
His statement as reported in the guardian and elsewhere is
saying how sorry he is and how wrong it all was.....

Storm in a coffee mug in terms of the actual offences. In the
context of being a high profile sportsman - very stupid boy. I
think Glos fining him would be a satisfactory punishment in
terms of club action though. I expect Eddie will pick him if he
feels he'll add something to the England team/squad.

Important to remember what the out come was he was found guilty
of:
common assault - trying to grab a body camera off a doorman
resisting arrest - don't slip your handcuffs idiot
Three other charges - assault on police, larceny and being
disorderly on licensed premises - were dropped.
Storm in a tea cup but stupid if you are an England player with
a reputation you are trying to put behind you

Were the charges dropped because they were difficult to prove,
or the police/CPS thought they had enough with the other
charges? I mean it seems by any account he was disorderly on
licensed premises at least! He bruised the arm and neck of the
policewoman, that's assault as far as I understand the legal
term to be. You can assault someone by shouting at them! And if
he didn't pay for the bottle of vodka he tried to remove, that's
larceny.

You don't have to hit a police officer to be charged with
assault. If you resist arrest you automatically commit the
offence of "assault on a police officer". Depending on your
previous and the situation surrounding it the police will decide
to charge or not.

They decided only to pursue those and he agrees to plead guilty.

Just to be clear
1. If you resist arrest, you do not automatically commit the
offence of assault PC
2. Shouting at somebody does not constitute assault. Though it
may be a Public Order offence depending on the circumstances,
what was said and whether the victim felt harrassed/threatened
etc
