Can I play devils advocate please?

I've been going to Twickenham since 1967, been at Quins for more
than 25 years, had a Son who got to a decent standard before he
hit uni.....so I obviously love the game....But I got thinking,
should it really be allowed?? Only full impact sport I know with
virtually no safety equipment, great swathes of each squad off
injured CONSTANTLY, and thats even before the Concussion debate
really gets started. If someone invented Rugby today it would
       surely get banned immediately!! #justmusing

Interesting viewpoint. I've also heard people say that
protective gear, such as is worn by American footballers, brings
a sense of recklessness. That is to say, they are more likely to
go flying in without any thought of the consequences. The point
was made about scrum caps too.

American Football definitely has that aspect to it, head
injuries are so common because players lead with their heads,
rather than trying to tackle safely for both themselves or their
opposing player. Watching today and a player has gone off with a
concussion after being knocked out cold from another player
       hitting him helmet to helmet.
Rugby at least teaches players to tackle in a slightly safer way
and I'm personally really happy with the new lower tackle laws
we saw at the RWC as that should hopefully lead to fewer
       injuries in the long term.

My daughter plays U18s at the moment and people always ask if
I’m worried about her getting hurt. I am but she loves playing
and if you are concerned about your flesh and blood being
injured then don’t let them get out of bed. Life would be
immensely dull if you didn’t do anything in case it was a bit
dangerous. There are many more things that people do that are
far more likely to injure a person that people never consider as
risky. Trampolining statistically has far more casualties but
nobody ever says, “ oh you have a trampoline in your garden, are
you worried about your children hurting themselves”.
I know there have been freak accidents that have ended in
people dying but crossing the road and driving a car do too. So
has random terrorist attacks as we have seen again this week.
Life is a risk but it’s so much more interesting if you do
       things you love.

My point about rugby (and doesn't happen in trampolining!) is
that two very fit men run at full tilt straight at each
       other.....it's madness!!!

Poofour jr is playing U15s for a very competitive school side,
and it's now getting to the point where some of the collisions
are genuinely brutal. Injuries are ticking up a bit, too, with
most of the team having missed a couple of games through injury.
However, he's comfortable playing and he's been trained
       properly.
I think an important point is that the point where rugby becomes
genuinely physical is also usually the point at which kids are
old enough to make their own decisions. As long as we're not
forcing them into playing, they can make that choice for
       themselves.
At the same time, World Rugby is taking injury risks more
seriously and I think it's taking the right steps to manage
them. It doesn't stop me worrying when one of my kids goes into
a big tackle, but I can view it rationally and accept that the
risk is one they are prepared to take.

Since the brain injury lawsuits, some teams NFL teams are trying
to teach safer tackling. In the past they were always taught to
lead with the head. It will take a while for attitudes to
       change.

Statisically fishing is the sport with the greatest fatality
rate! I think all we really need to do is really strictly impose
an underarm/armpit height for tackles and stop clearing out of
the ruck between non bound competitors, I.e first bind then
drive off, 2 separate movements, and by drive off inean push not
       charge or fly!

Yes, I think changing the clearout could be the next key change.
Looking at the first Glaws try on Sunday, there was clearly head
contact on Robshaw in the clearout and I wish the ref had looked
a bit harder at the clearout on replay.

There are definitely areas that need looking at and the ruck
clearing is one that I have thought should be changed. As you
say Bayernquin in your example which makes far more safe sense.
There have been some red cards for using the shoulder and not
the arms in rucks. There was one yesterday in the Bears V Irish
       game.
