For his age, he's very good. It was noticeable in this summer's
JRWC that he looked a cut above the other players on the pitch
in his matches - though stifled quite a bit by the dominance of
the French pack in the final.
His distribution is very good, and given anything approaching
quick ball his ability to manipulate defences and create space
is excellent. As others have commented, his kicking from hand is
accurate but a bit short of distance, and he isn't as good as
Ford or Farrell at seeing where to kick.
Defensively, I would say he's climbed a very steep learning
curve in the last 12 months. Early in the season he was visibly
targeted as a weak spot, but he's worked hard on it and while
he's unlikely ever to be a dominant defender, he generally makes
his tackles and slows the man down enough to stop the attack.
He's also pretty committed and feisty in his cover tackles.
It's still very early to say how he will develop - but if you
compare him to George Ford at the same age, I would say he is
       probably a little ahead overall.

Other than Nev I think he's been better than any of the other
FH's we have had since Paul B. Still some work to do but he's
still so young and still learning.

I think its safe to say that if Demetri Catrakilis stays fit
then Smith will be used more of a Sub this season, which i think
       is perfect for him.
He can develop as a player and bulk up a bit without the
pressure of being the starting fly half, which must be quite a
       big weight at his age.
He can come on later in the game when his quick pace and ability
to spot a gap will only add to our back line, especially if the
Cat has done his job and kicked the points from penalties and we
have developed a gap on the score board (the gustard/Saracens
       way)

I'm not sure why the Cat should be considered the default
starter. I'd say they're on equal pegging going into the new
       season

I think the Cat was brought in as the first team starter last
season then got injured, also Smith faded last season due to
playing/starting so many games. He is still young and needs to
       develop physically still.
It will depend on the type of game we want to play and looking
st Gustard's teams in the past.
It is about having a strong kicking and defensive game, with the
hope that you can kick your points and keep the board ticking
over and then let loose in the last 20 mins when the other team
       are chasing the game.
With that in Mind the Cat would start his kicking from the tee
is better than Smiths. The same logic applies that Smith will
get more space in the last 20 then the first 60.

Yes the Englamnd way before they went off the rails and the
Sarries way of old too. Not sure it's pretty, but the way things
have panned out last season, I think perhaps neccessary.

Fissler saying on twitter that Smith might exercise a clause to
leave due to change of coach. Not sure of this is just because
he's got a copy of his contract or anything more substantive

He definitely shows a great deal of promise and in terms of the
club and academy system - is a real propspect. I find it
interesting - as I did with Robshawm, Brown, Tom williams, etc.,
       - to follow their development and see if they attain their
       potential.
