I'm sensing that's an attempted dig in relation to one of my
earlier posts. Not sure why you'd want to do that. This seems
like an interesting and open discussion.

Hardly. Individuals/companies are free to sponsor individual
players outside of whatever deals/endorsements that are a part
of the T&Cs of the contract between the player & the club(in the
case of the car dealers, the sponsorship is in the form of
reduced price on cars on a regular basis in exchange for
promotion of said dealership by the player), as long as there's
no conflict between a players club sponsorships & the individual
sponsorships. That's the player (or their agent) trying to
maximize their earnings, irrespective of the club that they're
playing for.

I think that is much further from the truth than you realise -
it is professional sport and people do it as a career.
I have a friend who is a former All Black (not a very famous one
but got a few caps) and I remember a conversation with him about
how the he was quite disappointed when he first went to the
squad and realised that a significant number of the players were
there just for the job / money. As he said though it's not
surprising really when you think about the educational
background / economic opportunities that would otherwise be open
to many of the players.

Dismissing the money as "a nice extra" is missing the point.
While these players are professional rugby players, they're not
building a career in anything else. A tiny minority of them will
never need to do anything else outside of rugby - they make the
transition into coaching, public speaking and punditry.
For all the rest, they earn a better-than-average amount for an
uncertain period and then have to go and build a new career,
typically in a different area. They can't trade on their brand,
because very few people recognise their names (the final
question on Pointless a couple of years back was to name any of
the 2011-12 Premiership winning Harlequins squad. Any who had
played for Quins that year would have won you the prize, apart
from Robshaw and Evans). They often don't have the skills.
They've missed out on the years when most people build their
careers and start entry level jobs at 32 or 33.
They can still expect a substantial drop in income and a long
period spend making up for lost ground. If they're lucky,
they've saved or invested the money they've earned and have
spent their spare time earning qualifications or skills. But
they may well be carrying lifelong physical impairments.
For the women, it's much the same except that the few
professionals get paid about half what the men get paid. If
they're lucky.
I'm not sure we pay our professional rugby players fairly for
what they do. I'm not sure we can safely afford to pay them more
with the state of club finances, and as to Mr Wray's shenanigans
I have lots of sympathy for the players but little for him and
his club.
But we ought to recognise that playing rugby professionally
still has a huge "for the love of the game" component and be
grateful for that.

I think professional rugby players have a much better head start
for their post-playing career than your average Joe.

I think that is true of maybe the top quartile of performers at
club level. Not sure it is true of the majority though.

They may have a bit of cash put aside, or may have a head start
in buying a house; but as Poorfour details very eloquently, that
should be looked at in perspective. I'd say it's a step towards
short term financial security, in return for a late start on the
career ladder and potential long-term or permanent damage to
their health and well-being. At least in most cases.
