The general public. The average rugby player probably earns more
than the average wage of about 23;000k.

My mistake. I thought your comment was that you don't feel sorry
for rugby players putting their bodies through excessive
punishment.
I don't think anyone feels sorry for a rugby player "because" of
what they earn. But people need to get some perspective - it
sounds a lot when you say someone earns £100k a year. The
article points out that once tax is paid, they're not that much
better off; plus it's a short career ith limited security, since
most player contracts max out at 3 years and that career can be
ended at any time - the risk of which happening is far greater
than in most careers, I would suggest.
I wonder how many on here would want a pro rugby career whith
the thought of a 6 figure salary, if they really knew what went
into it.

Someone earning a high double digit salary. Say, £80k or £90k.
The take home pay of someone on £100k will not be £10k or £20k
higher.

Not that many, Quinky. And it is a lot of money (perhaps not to
you).
However, why does the author of the article seem to think that a
rugby player's career will end when he's in his 30's? Some
coach, many others get other jobs. The rugby career is short,
but they will still have over 30 years of potential career left.
If 10 players from each club left at the end of each year
(injury, retirement, no contract) then taking the Premiership
and the Championship (i.e. professional) then that equates to ~
250 people who have a potential career change. I'd suggest that
many thousands or even hundreds of thousands of non-sports
playing people have a career change every year and manage and
many with a lot less to play with.
Some, like Matt Hampson, who had a horrible injury will not be
in such a place, but then many non-sports playing people
involved in accidents are equally disadvantaged, possibly more
so as they may not have the same support as a sports club behind
them.

Too many. Maybe it's not immediately obvious,but take Richard
Hill as an example. I read that he will walk the rest of his
life with a limp. No great tragedy, some might say, but that
indicates permanent physical damage. Look at Jason Leonard with
his fused vertebrae. Fortunately very few suffer as severely as
Matt Hampson. I only ever played as an amateur and still suffer
neck and shoulder problems; I can only hazard a guess at how
severe the damage is on a pro player's body.
As for the salary, I know many people who earn £60k, £80k or
more. It really isn't the superwealth that some would have you
believe. I don't begrudge anyone what they earn, as it means
either or both that they've "earned" it, or that someone feels
happy to pay them that much.
Very few ex-players can earn a salary by coaching. It's a
numbers issue. For every squad of, say 45 players, there are
less than 45 coaches. Some positions will be specialist so will
not be readily available to ex-players, and since coaching is a
longer career than playing, the churn is likely to be less. Very
few end up as pundits. Not many will earn a windfall from
writing a book. In short, for every Martin Johnson or Jonny
Wilkinson, there will be hundreds or thousands of Sam Smiths or
Ricky Nebbetts. And don't forget, if a player leaves rugby at,
say 32 years of age, he will effectively be starting a new
career afresh.

How many players play for the money and how many play because
they love rugby. The money is a nice extra.

I don't that is accurate. A bit of work with a calculator, the
size of the playing squad - minus the marquee players - the size
of the salary pot - what is it 8 millyun pounds now - will tell
that it is a lot over £50,000 per player.
