I’m not sure he would be though? He’ll still be contracted to us
so still qualifies for selection.
Perhaps he thought his chances of making the 6N squad were 50/50
so decided he had more to gain by spending time in NZ and
putting himself in pole position for the summer tour to Japan. I
doubt the decision was made without any dialogue with the
England set-up.
From a short-term perspective, it’s bad news for us, but from a
longer-term POV, we’ve secured arguably our best player for the
next 3yrs and I’m confident that he’ll rip it up down there and
return a better player.
For now, I’m hoping Campagnaro settles quickly and stays fit. He
has the potential to be a great option for us if he can get back
in to form. Certainly more of a natural 13 than Lang.

All five NZ Super Rugby teams are due to be announced Tuesday
evening (NZ time). This is just the Blues choosing to highlight
the move prior to that.

Hooray for beer! When I read this last night I interpreted it as
him signing for the Blues for 3 years - I'm very happy now I
realise the actual situation.

I'm not sure what there is to be happy about - the Blues have
been a basket case for a decade and we're losing one of our very
best players for most of the season.

contract with the Blues!!

Has anyone considered that the loan to the Blues was the price
we had to pay to keep him? i.e. the new contract was conditional
on it?

We may or may not find out the reasons why this deal has been
done. Next time anyone is sitting near Joe you could ask him.
Archie White went to NZ which is more the sort of player you
would think could benefit from this . We can only hope that
there is some sort of swap. Or it could be cap related as
pointed out by some posters. Nobody knows.

This is my concern. If he were going somewhere he'd learn and
compete like the Canes then great.

Quite the reverse. It used to be their second team like our
Saxons, but now you have to have PI/Maori heritage to be picked.
