I think it's a smart move by both player and club.
Joe gets to fulfil an ambition early in his career, which will
doubtless develop him as a player and as a person. He then comes
back to us and will be with us for at least three years, or two
and a half, depending when the new contract starts.
The club has cover at centre. By the start of next season Joe
will be back, hopefully improved, having wider experience, and
will have to earn the shirt again.
Of course he'll be missed. But the option could have been that
he left us to pursue his dream, and we could have lost him for
good. We don't own Joe, he's free to do as he pleases. This deal
both fosters and demonstrates loyalty on both sides.

I do find the whole thing strange. It will not be an overnight
thing, I m sure this has been worked on for quite some time.
The good news being that he is here for 3 more years. I did
wonder if the Goneva signing was linked to this, in that we new
this was in the pipe line so we bring in Goneva for a season to
cover this and Earle being out (of course we do have other good
replacements for Marchant). Part of the reason for it maybe to
keep Marchant sweet, stop him looking elsewhere. Could it be in
relation to the cap, maybe maybe not. I think timing is just a
concedence (as said, I think this would have been in the pipe
line for a while).
I could understand better had it been a squad player going over
to play in NZ, like Murley or Gabs. Not one of the first names
on the sheet and probably next off the line for England. But he
is still only young and there is also the possibility that EJ
was spoken to first.
There is also that possibility that there is more to this deal,
maybe next season we will benefit from someone coming the other
way??
The announcement seemed to come at an odd time, but then in
terms of kiwi time it probably suits the Blues. The main good
news I take is that he is here for 3 more years. If he is
prepared to commit to that, something must be right at Quins

Thankfully, the club couldn't care less what you think. I would
guess that not many people do.

So Joe was sat behind me yesterday with many of the other
players. He was on crutches and had a surgical boot on. So had
he got injured recently, or taking the time to get surgery done
before January?? Either way I assume we won't see him again now
until next season.
Good luck to Joe when he's out there, all the best to him as a
person and great player.
But for us left behind, we need more luck just to stay up this
season given the very poor start this season. Was thoroughly wet
and miserable yesterday, and this news has not brightened my
morning 😫

8 May, Marchant wins two awards and things look bright - so good
in fact that he's a major selling point for season ticket
renewals. 6 months later he's split - probably never to play
for Quins again (as I g'tee you there will be a break clause) -
surely cause for a refund or rebate on the season ticket?
Another quality player slips through our fingers.
