What better time to announce this than after a garbage
performance when most of us are thinking how we would have been
so much better with Marchant playing.

Maybe they’ve realised that we are over the salary cap?

The more I think about this, the clearer it is that there is a
lack of basic strategic thinking - even from a timing
perspective. It just doesn’t make sense. I know joe says he’s
always wanted to play there, but you don’t do these deals when
you’re under the pump and you sure as hell don’t announce them
on the day you’ve been beaten at home by a team who hasn’t won
away in 14 months and are missing all of their most established
players. Such a frustrating time to support Quins.

Unless we’re over the salary cap and making a preemptive strike?

I think it’s a great nice for him and the club - I’d be
staggered if there wasn’t someone coming the other way.

It's quite possible we would be over the cap when he moves onto
his new terms so have to lose him for 6 months. It's what clubs
that obey the cap have to do.

That's a good point. Given how specific they have been about the
dates, I'd say you're probably right. July 1st is (I believe)
the start of the next season from a salary cap perspective. This
way, we can avoid losing him permanently, plus he gets some good
experience playing in a competition that's not too far removed
from the Champions Cup level week on week. It's just a shame
he's going to the Blues, as I support the Highlanders in Super
Rugby, so it'll be torn loyalties when the two teams face off
       for me!

I think the cap runs over the season. Unless Joe’s new terms
kick in immediately, the move won’t tally with the
       (hypothetical) overspend.

Great chance to play with Barrett and Ioane. Guess he’ll learn a
       load.
