Some of this discussion chimes with thoughts I've been having
recently about the primacy of an academy as the best way to
develop young players. Underhill (along with Dombrandt and
numerous others) developed their talents outside of the academy
. As others have pointed out few of our academy products outside
the obvious ones (Robshaw, Marler, Sinckler etc) go on to
achieve great things. Perhaps this is just the law of averages
at work, or perhaps the academy model is the problem. I am
involved in a community rugby club that has a number of boys in
both the DPP and the EPDG and I am struck all the time by how
these structures expect quite a lot of them at quite a young
age. "Unirig" is an example of someone who clearly didn't have
these expectations places upon him and has flourished. Just a
thought.....

Mate, it's painfully obvious I was talking about Quins players.
I'm not stupid enough to suggest that in the history of English
club rugby, no player has ever left to improve elsewhere.
T-Bone's point is more about our hiring practices. The idea of
replacing our academy graduates is to improve on them. We've
failed to do that in some cases, and that's the problem. Keeping
mediocrity because replacing them is a gamble is quite simply a
recipe for disaster.

Not entirely - he has played some 7s (and possibly 10s) since he
left but I realise he "...left to pursue other interests..." -
he does play a lot of cricket.
