No point in naming names as a) wasn't my point and b) ask anyone
an opinion on any player and you'll get 20 different answers!
Conversely not every academy player is going to be a Robshaw or
Marler some will always be Chis Snr or Wallace or white etc. You
still need them in any squad to do a job both on the training
ground and matches
My point was that the bedrock of the club for more years than I
can remember has been the products of the academy so to just lob
6-7 former academy lads onto the scrapheap got me thinking of
the ramifications of that. Can't have been nice for the rest, to
see mates they'ed grown up with and/or played in the trenches
with, just get a phone call to say "you're not wanted". Can't
have been great for the coaching staff or Admin staff to see so
many lad's they had nurtured from a young age just binned. Top
level sport is as much about what goes on in the head as being
fit and as skilled as the next guy. I can't believe it hasn't
had some negative impact on the club

Naming names is precisely the point. Being in the academy does
not guarantee a squad place. Being an academy graduate should
not guarantee continued employment if you're not up to scratch.
That is professional sport, and is how every other team handles
it.
You can't complain about players not being retained if you're
not willing to name names and say who should have been.

One way to look at it is where have those players that left
ended up.

No it’s not (naming names, as being precisely the point). The
point I’m making is, ditching 6-7 academy graduates that have
been with the club between 8-14 years each (my estimate) in one
hit must have had a negative impact (I believe). You don’t
necessarily have to agree or disagree, that’s just that’s my
response to your question.
PS I'm not complaining, I just gave my view on your question
“Does anyone really think we lost anyone we should have kept?”.

So what exactly are you advocating? Keeping substandard players
around because they've been here a long time?

Nope, what I'm 'advocating' (not sure that's quite the right
word) is that we should have kept the faith with the bulk of
academy graduates. They'll always be some that will go by the
wayside through 'natural selection' but in the main the Academy
process churns out a usable product. Not everyone can be one of
the Robshaws or Marlers

Not if the rest of the prem clubs have to cut their cloth the
same as Harlequins to meet the Salary cap. Just not enough jobs
to go around

Well however you look at it I don't think our academy has
produced many decent players within the last 8 years. A handful
only.

Yes, there's been a few since the turn of the 2010s but they're
not being produced in the same numbers that we used to.

I guess you could argyue that you might as well keep an average
academy product rather than bringing in an average player from
another club, be it championship or premiership.
Pros are as fandg2 says that they've been with the club, maybe
more loyal and willing to fight for their team mates. Know the
club better, their retention possibly good for morale.
Cons are that maybe they're too comfortable - something that I
think could be fairly levelled at some of the recent players
who've left, maybe they'd expect a higher wage as they've come
through the system.
I don't see any point in keeping an academy player who just
doesn't look up to it, but at the same time I don't see the
point in letting them go only to replace them with players who
don't really look the part either.
I suppose though that Gustard might feel they've been ghiven
plenty of opportunities and he's had a good chance to look at
them and doesn;t think they'll cut it, whereas maybe he can
improve players he's signed.
I can see it both ways really.
I do think we've produced some pretty decent players from the
academy obver the past 5 years or so, but we haven't had the hit
rate of past years.
