I think that players demanding xyz and refusing to do as the
Clubs want is new not just to rugby but the work world generally
my ancient generation tended to do as they were asked and were
too scared of losing their jobs to demand. Joe Marchant going to
NZ is another good example.

Fully agree. I mean how dare players have their own
opinions/wishes about their careers.
Interesting choice of words as well. Players "demand" but the
clubs "ask"....
Lastly, how do you know Marchant "demanded" to go to NZ? All
I've seen is speculation.

Ultimately I think it comes down to just knowing your place in
the market place.
I could guess Marchant probably wanted to play in NZ sometime,
Quins probably wanted to lock him in to a longer term deal so
the trade was made. It's still probably a win win for both as
Marchant gets what he wants and Harlequins get him back for at
least 2 years (normal contract length) but probably as a better
player.

Sabbaticals are a pretty time honoured tradition tbh

They certainly are in NZ (Carter is a prime example). There's
fewer examples of NH players having sabbaticals, but that's only
because historically we haven't gone for them> I know some think
it's a loss for us, but if it is, it's a short term impact for
what I think will be a long-term gain for both the player and
the club. March is at the right stage in his development as a
player to make the most of this opportunity to learn & improve
his game in a different environment, squad, & coaching
structure, and the club will get a more rounded & experienced
player in return.

I actually meant in "real life" rather than rugby. Sabbaticals
in rugby usually happen for financial reasons, which often don't
apply to NH players.

Just to say. I was not slagging off Goneva, he has been a
fantastic player. Shame we couldn’t sign him ten years ago. This
thread has highlighted the abondonment of Quins build from
within policy. Rightly or wrongly we shall see. With a lot of
Rugby still to go, let’s hope we can improve all round & have a
good season.
