I like this quote from the Beeb interview
"You have to look at those positives. I have also become a lot
closer with my Quins team-mates, which is hard to do when you
are playing for England.
"I would love to have been involved with England, but I got to
go on the [pre-season bonding] trip to Ibiza with the Quins
guys, and be part of an environment that has grown really
strong."

On a wider point, I don't like how some of the articles that
have come out of this media junket have gone with headlines that
make him sound like some stuck-up, entitled has-been. Which is
exactly the opposite of what he is and what he's actually trying
to say. The headline is more important than ever nowadays -
people don't read articles any more - so I'm sure Brownie's
haters will be all over this without actually reading his words.
Not that he cares a jot, of course. I just find it unfair.

Quite right TomBuckQuin. For example when I read the first
article on Rugby Pass with Mike Browns interview, it sounded
more or less how we all know Brown professionally carry’s
himself and unedited. Then you read the BBC’s article and it’s
all been chopped and changed around in order to make Mike Brown
sound more like he’s off on a tantrum, which he isn’t. It is
unfair however like you say, Brown couldn’t give a mango what
his haters think, he wouldn’t waste sleep on it. Still unfair
though how he is portrayed by some select media outlets. That’s
the BBC for you though I guess. They like to twist things the
way they like

England must find the right balance off the pitch as well as on
it for a successful World Cup campaign

I’ll never forget our pre-World Cup training camp in 1999. We
went to Couran Cove, an island resort off the Gold Coast where
we were absolutely beasted for a month. There was no salt, no
sugar, no way to get off the island. The players were fit as
butchers’ dogs but we couldn’t wait to get out of there. Serious
cabin fever set in.
I remember we were given two days off in the final week and
every player was given a choice between deep-sea fishing or
golf. 42 of the squad went fishing. Eight of us went to play
golf. It was bliss. We got a boat back to the mainland, a limo
to the course, two fourballs, a three-course meal with wine and
then a boat back to the island. We were just enjoying a beer
with the sunset when the fishermen came back.
Of the 42 guys who had gone fishing, 41 of them had been sick
over the side. And none of them had caught anything. Phil
Larder, our defence coach, was the only exception. We absolutely
pissed ourselves laughing, which obviously annoyed them even
more.
The reason I mention it is because getting team spirit right on
tour is not as easy as it looks. Striking that fine balance
between keeping spirits high but not going overboard. Staying
focused but not going stir crazy.
In the old, amateur days it was just a straightforward piss-up,
of course. Nothing too difficult there. But in this
uber-professional era, and especially in this social media age
when every punter in a bar can be a photojournalist, that isn’t
an option.
Japan is especially difficult because culturally it is so alien
to our players. There is not much English spoken outside of the
major cities. The food is very "out there". But you don’t want
them to lock themselves away. Sometimes they need to go out and
play.
I’ve seen a few photos flying around of the England boys out
doing some archery in Kiyazaki and I think that’s right. Get
them out there experiencing the local culture. Embrace it.
The spirit of a squad is governed by so many different factors.
Confidence, fitness. You look back now at the videos from 2003
and they just look like they mean business; lean, fit, focused.
They clearly believed they could go all the way. Subconsciously
their bodies were prepared for the full seven weeks. Energy and
concentration levels remained high.
Then you have the dynamic between the players, which depends not
only on the coaches and their edicts, but on the characters of
the individual players themselves.
I was known as a bit of a joker. I didn’t set out to be. I just
had deep-rooted attention deficit disorder! I actually hated
practical jokes. I wasn’t a Gazza-type, cutting people’s shoes
up or putting toothpaste in their socks. I’d never start a
fight. I used to enjoy just winding people up - usually the
forwards as it was such an uneven contest. They’d react in
different ways.
There were the fighters - your Mark Regans - whose retorts were
limited to expletives. There were those who would just revert to
violence - Martin Johnson. Then there were those who would try
to give some banter back. Lawrence Dallaglio was one of those.
He’d say something which he thought was funny and then look
around to see whether everyone had laughed. Of course, they
hadn’t.
If you can get the right alchemy within the group, though, then
you’re on your way. Then when you get the hard times, when the
injuries start to hit, you’re more able to cope.
I actually think this World Cup could really be affected by
injuries and that players flying in late could have a big
impact. In 2003 I think only two players were flown out. I’d be
surprised if we didn’t see six or seven replacements flown out
this time.
Some of them may yet have the opportunity to be heroes. It’s not
too late for someone like Mike Brown, for instance.
Mike is one of those big characters I spoke about. I'm not sure
whether he was punished by Eddie Jones for getting into that
scuffle with Ben Te’o last month. I don’t think so. I think
Anthony Watson’s return to fitness probably came just at the
wrong time for him. But I thought Mike was rather clever when he
spoke earlier this week, declining to talk about the incident -
he knows he could be on the next flight out there.
