Big call to say a waste of money, Gloucester defiantly got worth
out of their deal.

Now that's a shame, he would have made a big difference to our
attack last season!

My issue with Cipriani is always one of cultural fit. Given
Gussy's description of the new recruits ("no dickheads"), I
don't see that he and Cips (and NEv and Smith and Lang) would
have a particularly productive relationship. However good a
player he is, if he doesn't fit the team ethos he's not worth
having.

He played very well for Gloucester last season for sure.
However, if we'd signed him instead, we would have had him,
Smith, Lang, and Cat all as senior squad FHs. That's too many
for that position. Plus, he wouldn't have come in as a Marquee
player (as I understand the rules) so that would have been a
large chunk of our celery cap taken up. Would we have been able
to do as much business in transfers this time round in line with
Gussy's plans if we'd allocated as much of the cap as we would
have to Cipriani?

Agree he wouldn't be a good fit, however mercurial he may be.
But isn't this stuff about the salary cap old news these days? I
thought it was fairly well established that we have made
cutbacks in squad size/wage bill at the same time as the cap
increased, so we don't spend to the cap any longer? I know that
was the COS/JK line for years 'we spend to the cap' but i don't
recall hearing it for a couple of years now.
Please correct me but i was under the impression that its become
more about affordability/VFM than 'are we under the cap?'
(Which is presumably now the case for the whole prem except
Saracens!)

Well, we were fined for going over the Salary Cap in the 17-18
season, and I doubt we've made enough changes to drop *that* far
below the Cap. Plus I thought that Ellis said in a fan forum
that we were also pretty much up to the cap last season too.

I don’t suppose he said why he didn’t sign for us? Perhaps the
Cat didn’t want to be put out. I thought he was brilliant for
Glaws last season and probably why they came third. As pointed
out , there has to be more than being a fantastic player to make
you fit the culture being created at a club.
