Robson is pretty much ruled out due to the blood-clot situation
he had.

In many ways it's the best time, especially as the weaknesses
are more obvious.

It is not that it is wrong. I just feel that it of sheep are
looking at the Daly issue as many did reference Mike Brown and
his ability to not pass.
The way people go.on about Dalys defence is. blown out of all
proportion. Full back is a very difficult position to play. One
on with with other international class backs is going to be
tough. He got beaten by excellent skill by Aki, who handed him
off after breaking the miss tackle from Maro.
I feel he adds a lot to the game for England.
However to.e has come to play Watson at Full back against Italy.
We need to see if he can operate in attack as well as Daly.
Hopefully it stops a lot of carping on.

I disagree. Daly has been repeatedly shown up in defence. He was
out of position against Aki - he committed too early and that’s
what allowed the step, and he made the same mistake against
Davies in the Wales game. I can only remember him taking one
competitive high ball in any of his games at fullback - and he
dropped that immediately thereafter.
He is a liability at fullback that the better teams are already
targeting, and he does not create enough additional chances to
offset this.

The other teams see him as a weakness as they target him from
the kickoff. They all put high balls in his direction. Do they
do this if Brown is at FB.

It's more subtle than that. Daly isn't completely hopeless under
the high ball, but he's vulnerable under pressure. Repeatedly
targeting a player with kicks isn't the way to do it. You just
give them experience and you pass up the opportunity to do other
things. A better way to exploit that weakness is to pick your
moment and put up a ball when you have a good chance to give
them trouble. Wales did that in the 6N with their last minute
try from a fairly speculative kick (of the sort that Brown has
routinely contested far better in the past); Ireland did that
with contestable balls in midfield - one of which Daly caught
but dropped on his return to earth.
More specifically, both Wales and Ireland targeted his defensive
positioning. Wales did it strategically - the Davies try was
clearly a move designed to isolate him in a one on one, and it
worked. Ireland were more opportunistic, but Aki exploited him
committing to a line too early.
(By the way Twickenham on Saturday, England's positioning for
receiving the kick-off was bizarre - the other players formed a
ring with Daly in the middle. Never seen that before.)

I think this all comes down to one particular point. No one is
saying (or should be saying) Daly is an awful player. Neither
should anyone be declaring that Brownie is perfection on toast.
The issue is that Brownie's strengths + weakness = world class
FB (and, I think we'd all agree, make him not very useful at all
anywhere else on the pitch). Daly's strengths + weaknesses =
excellent international winger/potentially OC, but nowhere near
a good FB as things stand.
I don't care how much Eddie claims to have recognised certain
changes in the modern game (I agree that there are lots), FBs
will always be the last line of defence and as such have to
defend as an FB. This is a very specific skillset - the sum of
multiple parts including positioning, aerial dominance, reading
of the game from the back field (the whole game looks different
from back there), tackle technique, aggression etc. Daly hasn't
shown that he's capable of reading the game in this way - at
least not yet - so Eddie either needs to try Watson there or
cross his fingers and pray that the other 14 front up to such an
extent that Daly doesn't have to do too much defending. Those
are the options the squad currently allows.
Of course, it's also technically possible that Daly learns to be
an FB in between now and the more important WC games. I just
find that incredibly unlikely given the time he's already had
and how close we now are. 2023, I would have said by all means
give him a long run up and we'll grin and bear it in the shorter
term. 2019 just feels like a cycle too soon for his conversion
to bear fruit.

It's not blown out of proportion. He repeatedly messes up in
defence, costs us tries, struggles like a total novice with the
basics of the position, and looks like a fish out of water. The
"excellent skill" was Aki running around him and then brushing
off a weak tackle - there was nothing special about it. There's
countless examples of his unsuitability to the role.
I am crossing my fingers and hoping he doesn't get exposed too
often at the world cup, but it's hope rather than expectation.
He was a world class wing but is a pretty awful fullback.

My worry is that other teams will spot the ring of players we
are putting round him to prevent him being put under pressure
(see the first attempts to drop high balls on him in the first
Wales game). But if we have people protecting him, then
elsewhere the cover must be thinner, and people could exploit
that.
