Maro - private/prep school
Ludlum - state
JJ - private/prep school
Watson - private/prep school (St George's, Weybridge)

I'm with Blucs. It is hard for kids who are BAME or even kids of
all colours to get involved in rugby. The state school system is
abysmal in terms of a pathway to rugby. A few people get picked
up, I think Itojey got a scholarship to Harrow.
That is great, but limits numbers. State schools are not going
to start playing RU anytime soon, well maybe 7's.
I have started taking my 5-year-old son to Fleet & Aldershot on
Sundays for an intro to rugby clubs...what is lovely is that
they don't care who you are there colour & class, there is a
bacon sandwich for the parents and the kids get on with it. Not
a BAME face there at all. Then again north Hampshire / Surrey is
not as diverse as my state school in Ladbroke Grove.

There are probably official definitions of disadvantaged that
rule out everyone involved -- certainly Sink and Genge are from
backgrounds that you can't call privileged.

He was at prep school before that. Don't know if that was also a
scholarship but he was in the system

People harping on about diversity is in itself divisive. If you
believe that we are all equal, stop finding ways to
differentiate.
I don't care about people's backgrounds, wealth, education. If
they play well, that makes the game better.
I've played alongside and against many non-White players. We
were all just rugby players, coming through our clubs, which no
preference afforded to anyone.
Please let's not allow identity politics to sour rugby, like it
sours every other area that it's brought into.

Ok mate. So the era of “no blacks, no Irish” signs was when we
weren’t allowing “identity politics” to “sour” things was it?
Or was it when gay people were sent to prison for putting a
fleshy nozzle into a bottom?
Or maybe when poilcemen told women who’d been punched around by
their husbands not to make a fuss?
It would be great if you could define your terms a little more
clearly so we know which area you feel has soured everything?
And just in terms of rugby - you’re making Ugo’s and my point
exactly. You’re in favour of equality even though you don’t want
to be.
The thing is, the “no preference” bit is exactly what we’re
talking about. And rugby is played and watched almost
exclusively by people whose background, wealth and education
does make them not like everyone else.
And yes, I’m sure there are many individual examples of people
who say they play rugby and aren’t of that type - but the
statistics show that it is, by a large majority.
If we ever want the sport we love to be played by more people,
watched by more people and everyone is afforded the same
opportunities as you so fullsomly suggest - then people like Ugo
absolutely have the right to raise it in the eloquent and
non-divisional way he did.

Blucher, I'm not your "mate", and doubt I ever will be.
The only equality I actually want is equality of opportunity.
I've visited many clubs over the years, and have never seen a
sign denying entry to blacks or Irish. Care to point out which
ones have these signs?
So less people of specific groups play rugby. Have you
considered that maybe they just don't want to?
But since you appear to want to dredge up historical racism, I'd
best not introduce you to my partner. She's Swedish, and no
doubt you're fuming at what the Vikings did.
I suggest you try joining the 21st century instead of festering
in your historic rage.
