OT: Two Premier League players simultaneously set to come out as
gay

yes, I know it's football but..

How many openly gay rugby players are playing in the
premiership?
I'd say rugby isn't as inclusive as it likes to think.

Yes but does their sexuality matter?? I couldn't care less
either way.......Let their family/fiends/team-mates know
perhaps, but do the paying public have a right to know???

It's not a question of "having a right to know". There are
usually at least two bigger factors involved.
Firstly, and more importantly, it's about representation and
being a role model. There's still a lot of homophobia in
football - and a degree of it in rugby, as the Folau furore (and
Billy's disappointing response to it) shows. If two established
players can come out as gay, and be accepted by team mates, fans
and the wider community, it makes it easier for those who follow
them in the sport, and it helps vulnerable teenagers struggling
with their sexuality to accept themselves and recognise that
there is nothing wrong with being gay.
Secondly, there is probably a tabloid story somewhere behind
this. It's generally better to come out on your own terms than
to be outed by a newspaper on their terms.

I know what you mean, HESM, I'm not advocating every gay player
shouting it from the rooftops and bringing it into every
interview etc..., but similarly it shouldn't (still) be
something to hide from your team mates, a secret that makes you
unhappy or something that becomes a mental health issue (as in
Nigel Owens). It should be as unremarkable as being vegan or
saying you're a member of a particular religion. I just get the
impression there's still a stigma about it, and there shouldn't
be. We, the crowd, have said it makes no difference to us that
Nigel Owens is gay, indeed I admire the man for coming out with
it (both senses). This isn't the 70s, we've moved beyond Monty
Python's 4 Bruces sketch. It really ought not to be any sort of
big deal, but the silence kind of indicates it might be.
As for those poor bloody footballers, well you got to admire
their balls! (as it were!).

Personally couldn't give 2 hoots what they are but, if it helps
themselves and/or others then well done to them!

No paper would “out” someone anymore as it goes.
But the answer on how many openly gay rugby players is zero.
As I mentioned in the thread about Folau, rugby says a lot of
things about equality and rainbow laces and inclusivity but it’s
got a very long way to go.
And as above their sexually matters not a jot - except perhaps
to other gay people who may feel more like playing or watching
rugby if they know it’s for them.

Yep you’re right. So that never happened then.
Still not a single gay guy playing in any top flight rugby,
football or cricket team - those gay dudes should really try
harder to make it...

Wouldn’t it be good if we could just forget about gay, straight
or whatever and just focus on people’s talent as a sports person
