MARK LAMBERT SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION

HARLEQUINS IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT ONE-CLUB MAN MARK LAMBERT
HAS SIGNED AN EXTENSION TO HIS CURRENT DEAL.
The loosehead Prop joined Harlequins ahead of the 2003/4 season
and has since gone on to make 239 senior appearances, making him
one of the most decorated players in the Club's history.
He was part of the squad that went 14 matches unbeaten on their
way to an Aviva Premiership title victory in 2012 and was named
on the bench in the Final against Leicester Tigers at Twickenham
Stadium. He then started in the successful LV= Cup Final against
Sale Sharks the following year.
Lambert made his 200th appearance for Quins in the 2016/17
season; one of only four players in the current squad to achieve
that number, alongside Mike Brown, Chris Robshaw and Danny Care.
A former England U19 and U21 representative, the front row was
also called up for the England Saxons during the 2009 Churchill
Cup.
Off the field, Lambert serves as an ambassador for both the
Harlequins Foundation and humanitarian organisation, Future
Hope, and was named Community Player of the Season at the
2017/18 Premiership Rugby Awards for his outstanding
contribution in the charity sector.
He is also the RPA Chairman and has held that role since 2017
ensuring player welfare is central to every decision across the
current rugby landscape. He has been integral to key decisions
around the provision of in-season rest weeks and the existing
domestic season structure.
Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: “Lamby has been a phenomenal
servant to Harlequins during his 16-year tenure at the Club, and
we are delighted that he has signed for another season. He is a
bear of a man, is bright and has real feel for the game.
“He is first and foremost a Harlequin through and through and he
adds a lot to the group. He was one of our stand-out performers
in pre-season last year and unfortunately we weren’t able to
select him as much as I would have liked. I am however delighted
that in keeping with our philosophy we have found a way where
the big guy can compete and put his best foot forward this
season.
“He is and will remain an important figure as we continue to
grow as a group in 2019/20.”
Mark Lambert added: “Harlequins has been a huge part of my life
and that of my family for the best part of two decades now.
“I feel a huge sense of pride every time I pull on the Quins
jersey and I love being part of a team of players who share
great challenges and incredible experiences together. That is
what rugby is about for me and these things will motivate me as
much in my 17th professional season as they did in my first.”

The section I've underlined is interesting. Suggests some sort
of management of game-time and using him in other ways like
unofficial coaching for some of the Academy boys, maybe...

I have a theory......We were looking for cover (linked to a prop
at Ealing) but he chose Newcastle. We have asked Lambert to
stay on and cover due to not being able to get someone in. Not
the worst news.

Good news. Useful cover to have and I suspect doesn't break the
bank. Not entirely sure what "we have found a way where he can
compete" means. Does that mean they've agreed a deal with
limited game time and a lower salary, does it mean fitness
programme? Who knows.

A most curious phrase, clearly laden with meaning! ("He was one
of our stand-out performers in pre-season last year and
unfortunately we weren’t able to select him as much as I would
have liked. I am however delighted that in keeping with our
philosophy we have found a way where the big guy can compete and
put his best foot forward this season.") My first thought was
that "unfortunately we weren’t able to select him as much as I
would have liked" had something to do with commitments made to
Lewis Boyce (before he signed) as to the amount of his game
time, then further exacerbated by Marler retiring from England?

I haven't looked but did Lambert play in the A-league/Prem Cup
games or was he simply injured and therefore couldn't be
selected as much as Gustard would've liked. Could he have other
commitments that mean he can't train as often but they have
found a way round them? Is he carrying a knock that means his
body can't take training and playing in the same week?
For me, there's several reasons why somebody may not be playing
before we start looking at what may or may not have been
promised elsewhere.

I'm hoping the idea isn't that he'll cover tighthead too. That
experiment all those years ago really did not work. I'm worried
that we've lost 3 tightheads so far this off-season and have
only brought in one... I presume Sassone is graduating from the
academy but is that going to be enough coverage?

There are many worse options than having Lambo (what's this
"Lamby" nonsense?) for another season. He will only have a
finite number of games left in him, but with the number of new
and newish players in the pack it's useful to have the
experience around.
I'd hope we wouldn't have to use him at TH - but I do wonder if
Bomb's coaching could help to address some of his weaknesses on
that side.
