I would prefer it if a different head coach was chosen for each
       tour.

But in Test matches it's W3, L2, D1 so looks great on paper. But
they struggled to beat a very poor Austrailian side and two of
those test matches came down to 1 kick so could easily have been
the other way. Not taking Robshaw in 2013 was a disgrace,
especially when Warburton was injured and couldn't play all the
test matches. Roll forward 4 years and guess what, he was
injured again and dropped for the first test......But he's a
       great leader though!!!!!!!!!!!
Roll on another 2 years of waiting to be disappointed about the
       lack of English/Quins players.

Tbf it was Dan Lydiate travelling ahead of Robshaw that was the
ridiculous bit. He was injured and still got picked (and was
       hopeless)

Oh no Bolly, even if he'd picked 10 Quins, my feelings would be
the same. Nepotism shouldn't be the main requirement for a Lions
       coach.

How about knowing the players and what they will bring to the
team? The squad has precious little time together and any
shortcuts are helpful to quickly building a successful team.

A lack of Quins players? We’ve got one England player, Sink.
       That’s it.
So Smith and Marchant might get England time but they are
unlikely to be Lions material by then.
So not sure what you’re on about.
Even if Robshaw, Brown and Care weren’t already out of England -
they’ll be nearly retired by then.

It's the whole system of how the squad is picked that's wrong
for me. 'Knowing what a player can do for the squad' doesn't
mean that they are the best player in that position or that they
deserve to be there. I see the Lions as the pinnacle of a
players career and allowing a coach to pick his buddies just
because he knows them is wrong.
In 1997, Ian McGeechan didn't take all Scots and put together a
squad that had balance but the best players in each position,
along with some excellent wildcards, e.g. John Bentley. Since
then, it's been national coaches taking out of form/injured
players who they 'know' and the results have been mixed and that
includes Sir Clive Woodward, just to show I'm not being
       jingoistic.
The real test for a coach would be a system similar to the Ryder
Cup selection where a points system for players guarantees that
the top 2 in each position tour along with extra from the 3rd,
4th or 5th place players and 5 wildcards. There are enough stats
available to enable this, with a weighting depending on the
standard of competition you play in week in, week out. That way
a player earns his place not given it because he plays for the
       coach at national level.
Of course if you guys believe it was right that Robshaw didn't
tour in 2013 (and I'm sure other teams have similar players) or
that Marler shouldn't have started a test match in 2017 then i'm
happy for you to shout me down. It is all about opinion, after
       all.
