Well, yes, but not in an absolute sense, any more than any other
line, real or imaginary. It gives the direction, in the same way
that perpendicular to the touchline does. But I don't think you
can pass the ball forwards NFL style beyond the try line.

I just think being constantly told that I dont understand the
Law is proof that the Law needs rewriting. I humbly ask you to

And? Putting a GPS sensor inside the ball in combination with
that line, or any other virtual or real line can't define a
forward pass, on its own.

Well, since no solution works perfectly "on its own", should we
not bother with anything?

That's not what I meant. I just meant that you need more input
than a GPS in the ball and a direction because you need to take
into account the motion of the passer. Whether it's feasible or
not I have no idea.

I know GPS can track a car's speed fairly accurately, but it
can't really deal with a jinking runner I would have thought.
But BB is right, if you knew speed of the runner towards the try
line, flight of the ball relative to try line and knowing
distance of pass it'd be easy enough to compute whether the ball
goes forward (assuming someone has built a table of distance
forward to allow for different speeds).
Does the speed of the pass affect this too? Does a long, loopy
throw go forward differently to a pass like a bullet?
It's all too much for my little brain, no wonder the ref just
waves play on unless it's hugely obvious.
