Plus a player with out-stretched arms could make a pass
backwards to a player marginally in front of him.
I really don't get why this comes up so often. The forward pass
law is easy to understand and generally easy to observe in
practice. The only difficulty comes with borderline passes where
the officials (and fans commenting) aren't in the ideal position
to judge with total accuracy, but this is simply a feature of
the game just like many other infringements that will get missed
for similar reasons.

But as I pointed out, it's a law impossible to police correctly
because it relies on a number of variables of speed and
direction that the referee cannot possibly work out on the fly.
So the refs just take a rough guess. I have a lot of sympathy
for deadly's approach which is at least more measurable.

While I agree that refs have a difficult job, in real time, it's
actually far simpler than you suggest. The only question is, did
the passer pass the ball towards the opposing try line.

It's not more measurable at all. It's a preposterous suggestion.

Whether a player is behind another player is infallibly
measurable. That’s why offsides are never questioned or
challenged. In rugby or football <sarcasm>

If you threw a 20m pass at speed to a man (also at speed) who
started off a bit behind the passing player it's still going to
look like a gigantic forward pass to everyone who doesn't
understand how this works

I completely agree with you Jammy. So why not make this
absolutely clear in the wording of the Law?

Because you have to take into account how this has to be
interpreted by the officials on the pitch. The easiest way to
translate this is by looking at how the pass was thrown, not
trying to work out distances, vectors, momentum...
