Yorkshire Carnegie CEO Gary Hetherington
THE dwindling band of players at Yorkshire Carnegie have been
told the club are preparing to head into a Company Voluntary
Arrangement (CVA) as they are unable to meet their financial
commitments.
The ailing Championship outfit have failed to reach a severance
package with all eight of the players under contract for next
season and are now facing oblivion.
Carnegie were offering only a fraction of the total figure owed
– believed to be over £500,000 – and three of the bigger earners
have stood their ground.
CEO Gary Hetherington delivered the news to the players via
email on Friday and the future of the club will rest in the
hands of creditors and the RFU when the CVA is put in place.
If the creditors fail to agree to the CVA offer, Yorkshire
Carnegie’s trading company will be wound up.
Even if the CVA offer is approved, Carnegie will still have to
prove to the RFU over the next couple of months that they are in
a position to fulfil their Championship fixtures for the 2019/20
season. Until then, no recruitment can take place.
According to Championship regulation 5.3.9, Carnegie will not be
hit with a points deduction as long as creditors are paid in
full, or the outstanding creditors agree to waive or a repayment
programme for outstanding amounts within six weeks of the
insolvency event occurring.
Should Carnegie’s survival bid fail, the Championship will
operate as an 11-team league next season as the deadline for
redrawing the leagues has now passed.
For Carnegie fans and rugby in North, it is a sad state of
affairs. With professional Rugby Union in Leeds on its deathbed
and Newcastle relegated to the Championship, the onus is now on
Sale Sharks to fly the flag for the region.
On Monday Yorkshire Carnegie released the following statement,
in which Hetherington said: “The Leeds RUFC Board of Sir Ian
McGeechan, Prof Paul Smith, Rob Oates and myself are responsible
for the running of Yorkshire Carnegie and for making major
decisions on the Clubs’ future and we are now awaiting a
decision from the Shareholders of Yorkshire Tykes RUFC, who
provide the funds to enable LRUFC to operate, before a further
announcement can be made.
“But, it is fair to say the Club is in a critical position
having lost its major source of funding and the Board is now
working closely with the RFU and YTRUFC Shareholders to manage
our current predicament and hopefully plot a way forward.”

Seems a shame. Sale won't be the only Northern club though,
aren't Doncaster in the Championship too? (Newcastle also will
be off course.... ) I guess relying on the largesse of one
person is always risky.

It is a shame that Richmond don't get a reprieve from dropping
out of the championship.
But, I guess that if you let Richmond stay up, then you need to
keep one of either Loughborough Students, Esher or Caldy in
National 1 and so on all down the ladder.

I bet Richmond are pi$$ed. If points could have been deducted
Richmond could probably have stayed in the Championship. Even so
seems odd that the Championship want to stay at 11 teams seeing
that all the clubs wanted more games, to generate some cash.

It'll be a real shame if Yorkshire does fold. It's not so long
since they were in the Premiership. It also means that there's
less opportunities for young Union players in the region to get
noticed.

The rugby paper journalist has not read the regulations.
Richmond are on notice they may be reprieved.
However, there is also a rumour that Ampthill's ground will be
rejected - due to issues getting ambulances to the pitch.
This was a problem in a match against Coventry in the 17/18
season.
They have acquired a new location a mile of so away but cannot
move before the 20/21 season.

I talked to one of the guys from Richmond at the Sun Inn after
the last game of the season. He said that Richmond stood to
lose £500k in funding due to the drop. So, that is pretty
devastating to them.
The point is that things like hiring a coach to travel to away
games costs the same no matter whether you are in
Prem/Champs/Nat1. Richmond will have the joys of travelling to
Darlington next season.
Also, he was saying that they were losing a lot of players due
to the relegation. Therefore, he thought that it was unlikely
that they would come back to the Championship anytime soon.
From watching teams such as Blackheath and Rosslyn, I think that
he could be right.

A big shame if this happens. They'd be the second Champo club to
go to the wall in a few years.
National 1 is going to be hugely competitive next year.
Blackheath, Rosslyn and Old Elthamians were all pretty close
behind Ampthill up until the end.

OEs have of course lost Secure Trading as a sponsor.
They apparently have got a new sponsor to unveil according to
their supporters on rolling-maul.
It is their AGM this week and I assume we will hear after that.
It is a tough league to get out of - at least upwards. Far too
easy to drop down.
Moseley only just avoided the drop. It was a three way dog fight
with Cambridge and Caldy and it took a last minute score by
Moseley to condem the Wirral club.

Went to watch OE's a couple of times last season , but not
really up to speed with Nat1 and Championship , just wondering
if there is any appetite for a North and South Division at
Championship Level and combining the two ?
Might help with costs and encourage away support if more local ?
